The sun's rays washed over the humid Wind Country desert, just like any other normal day. However, today would change the life of one five year old child. She lived in this bleak terrain with her clan, those who were named Ookamika, not as a respected clan member but as a servant to her father. By all means, she looked almost just as any other clan member; gold eyes, long uncut strand of hair in the color of her father's hair, loose clothes accented with gold here and there - but her hair, of a violently red shade, marked her as a half blood, a mix. Such a wild hair color was a gift of her mother's, a woman from Sungakure, the Village Hidden in the Sand. This child was one of many children her father had; the vile man knew no end in his wives.

But today, this child could forget the sick mind of her father, of how he had relegated her to the ranks of servitude. Today, she was stopped from her daily chores by the clan's leader, a man named Jigoku with dark black hair. He was rumored to have been alive for the entirety of the clan's eighty year existence, but whether or not it was true, she didn't know. "You have an important visitor, Saori," he had said in a most gentle voice. She had hesitated. Her father would be out of the clan village, west of Suna, until four in the afternoon. It was out of custom for a servant to been seen to by others without the master. Despite her reluctance, Jigoku ushered the girl out of the village and some distance away to the coverage of some rare trees. Under its shade sat a cloaked man, whose red hair stuck out from his hood. He stood up when he felt Jigoku's approach.

"Jigoku," he briefly nodded. Jigoku slowly nodded in acknowledgment to the man in return.

"Saori," Jigoku said to the girl, "this man is going to teach you something very important today. Listen carefully and never let your father know of this. As the clan leader, this is an order. Do you understand?" Saori had slowly nodded then. She nearly ran after Jigoku when he left, but the cloaked man held her back.

"Saori," he said gently. Saori could only stare at the hand clutching to hers. It felt different. It felt like wood.

The man pushed his cloak back, all of his messy red hair falling loose. He crouched to her level, light brown eyes never once leaving her gold ones. "I won't hurt you. My name is Akasuna no Sasori."

"I know," she said quietly. "They say bad things about you."

Sasori nearly let a smirk slip. "If you know my name, do you know you are named after me?" She shook her head. "I knew your mother." Her breath hitched, eyes widening. Immediately, all resistance disappeared. More than anything, she wanted to know the mother who had left her behind with her father. "But I'm afraid that's not why I'm here. Your father is a dangerous man. One day, he will try to kill you. But I'm going to make sure he doesn't." A lovely blue glow formed around his fingertips. "This is chakra. Even in its basest form, it is a formidable weapon. If you are ever threatened, even by your father, do not hesitate to kill."

Then, so many years ago, neither would have thought how much Sasori had twisted her fate.

First important memory from Saori's life: when Sasori taught her how to use chakra! He only taught her the basics; Jigoku taught her the jutsu.
