You came back at a big time, they just launched the beta test for the new site update, Eclipse, a few weeks ago! It's a lot more modern, though it still has some bugs to be fixed and tweaks to be made. You can see what they have planned here: www.deviantarteclipse.com/
If you've opted in as a Beta Tester (which you can do as a Core Member), you should be able to access it now, but if that doesn't work, you can request access through the site I linked.
