Hi Samantha, I don't suppose you would let me borrow this picture for future reference? I'm a doctoral student and I hope to teach one day. This picture would look terrific in a Powerpoint on "meeting of two cultures"

This is very powerful. It has so many different political and social statements in it, that I'm not real sure where to start. Every time I look back at it I see something new. The past and the present, and maybe the future as well. The gun. The different skin colors. The different genders. The different ages, culture, clothes. The leading ribbons on the little girl being held out of frame by a "larger" power. Innocence and violence. Friends and enemies. The fact that he is touching her with tenderness and care, and she is hold him back.
What this says about US history is amazing. And what is says about what could have (and should have) happened is rather sad. And to think that we haven't moved very much beyond it yet.
Every once in a while you capture something with your camera that you weren't looking for, or you didn't really know was there. I'm willing to bet that you thought this would be interesting when you took this shot, but you didn't realize what you had truly captured. I think (for whatever my opinion may be worth) that you captured "The Decisive Moment" (see Henri Cartier-Bresson for anyone who is unfamiliar with that). If you had shot this when they weren't touching it would not have had the same power or impact.
In your journal I suggested that you may want to change some of your images from this day into black & white. I'm not sure that would be a good idea for this image. I think the colors lend a great deal to this image. The skin colors, the body paint, even the cloths. It is a modern commentary of our history, and modern photography is color.
Anyway, I've babbled enough. Congratulations on capturing this image. I think it is stunning.
