Description Another old watercolour painting from my back up files ... melting icebergs under a microscope perhaps?

great fun going through your old stuff and rediscovering what you used to do years ago!

Really beautifull. How did you made this?
Just random painting and then see what you can get out of it.
Or did you first figure the hole thing out before you started?

Thank you very much!

I used to work at the British Antarctic Survey, the photos I saw from those who actually went out to the Antarctic are stunning ... this was supposed to capture the ideas of Icebergs melting ... with the idea that you wouldn't kow what scale this was being viewed at ... whether very large iceberg or microscopic structures of melting ice ...

There were several versions that failed. I started with loose washes painted very quickly and then added layers of detail getting tighter and slower with each layer. There may be about 30 layers in some places. It took about 60 hours over two weeks.

I love how it appears almost like a random, happy accident at first glance. Then as you get in closer, it becomes an organized composition. Looks effortless, and graceful. Very nice work.

Wow, wonderful water color. I've just started taking a watercolor class this semester..

What was your technique for this one? I'm not sure how you came up with this texture..

Was there a reference photo?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SalHunter In reply to Chelovek [2007-10-18 08:46:51 +0000 UTC]

Thanks!

I used lots of reference photos of Antarctic ice ... a couple of friends I knew back then worked in the Antarctic and kindly gave me a CD of their photos. It's a stunning place.
