Description An ever growing series of doodles on laboratory filter paper ... this is 12.5cm diameter, see the rest of the series here salhunter.deviantart.com/galle…

Pencil and silverpoint on gouache ... the silverpoint didn't work on this one so I added depth with pencil

Thanks so much for comments and support, very much appreciated

I like the color here. Silverpoint is really light and sort of delicate. How heavy is this lab paper? I'm sort of wondering what it can withstand as a support before it buckles or color bleeds through.

Actually, the lab paper is quite robust and hangs together well even when wet ... which is what you would expect from a functional laboratory filter paper. Silverpoint is used to bring out details and generally blend areas together. It can be delicate on gouache, especially if the gouache layer isn't quite right. On this one, it didn't quite work so I used pencil to define the darker areas in the middle better.

Makes sense. The paper would have to be pretty tough. And gouache has chalk in it, so it can be fragile as it builds up. Seems like you might have an easier time if you applied the silverpoint or pencil first then went in with thin washes of watercolor and touches of gouache at the end. But that's a different workflow.

I bet that paper is cherry with airbrush color

Keep up the good work, Sal!

Would you like me to send you a sample filter paper selection so you can experiment too?

That's a generous offer and I appreciate it. But it's better if I finish the works I have already started.
