My contest entry for Skailla 's contest!
Oh gosh… This really took forever to finish! I stopped counting the time after 40 hours… BUT! Here it is! I started with my piece the day the contest was announced... and let me tell you, I really needed every second... O_O
The theme of the contest was: "Draw one or more of Skailla's characters!"
And… so I did! I picked Amy and Dikon from her story "Blue Blood"!
I was originally going to go for her characters form "Darktide", you can see the sketch here: Contest entry sketch #1 I even practiced drawing the characters:
But something about the story of a wolf and a fox fascinated me… How they fight against the wolves to claim their freedom.
So here's a quick explanation of the image: The wolves (mutation) in the top-right corner are about to grab Dikon and bring him back to them, but together with Amy, he escapes. The blue area in the bottom-left corner is a water-surface which is upside-down, meaning that they're doing the opposite of drowning. They float up to the surface and away from the hellish wolves on the bottom.
It's complicated I know, but I mostly went on feeling more than logic.
It's open for interpretations, I'd like to hear yours as well! But as I said, this drawing took me over 40 hours to finish and none, I repeat, NONE of the leaves are copy-pasted. All of them are drawn from scratch and I don't want to draw leaves again in a LOOOONG time.
But why did I enter this contest??? Well, because you can win a drawing by Skailla and a CINTIQ!!
(A very luxurious drawing tablet) Both of these prizes are really desirable, so what did I have to lose, I had to at least try! My current drawing tablet is severely damaged and so is the pen that go with it, so getting a new one is something I wish really bad for! Oh, and here's a step-by-step thing of this piece:

How is this not a DD? Just amazing, I can't believe you've done ALL THOSE LEAVES BY HAND.
You deserved first place in it's entirety, not just because it's such an elegant art piece, but because the amount of time and effort put into it. I'm not saying that no one else put a lot of dedication to their work, it's just... Your work really shows!
I mean, those leaves are tedious, the most work I've ever put into drawing are scales for my dragons and that alone usually throws me off and makes me want to start something else. xD
There is so much more to be said for this piece, but I am at a loss for words.
Simply put, and as said, AMAZING, bravo, and congrats again on first place!

My dear, words cannot describe how amazing this piece is.
Seriously, I’ve spent days looking for words to tell you just how beautiful this is!
Firstly, let me talk about the picture.
It’s drop dead gorgeous. Everything about it screams poetry, the colors, the composition, the characters, everything. I LOVE all the leaves in the background, it’s just so unique and beautiful! Specially since this is an underwater scene, gosh. Your style is just awesome, The amount of life and expression it has is just a rare thing to see.
But seriously, the meaning behind it was what finished blowing my mind. You’ve thought about everything. I’m still not over how genius this is! You captured the essence of Blue Blood in every aspect possible, and made into a beautiful dream!
I just love the concept of them floating into the surface, away from the sinking horrors of Dikon’s past! And I just LOVE the fact that the picture is upside-down! The colours represent the feeling so well, this is a masterpiece.
And I must say, I love the Darktide characters you drew! Gosh, I’m so glad you shared them!

Sally, you insane person, the amount of detail is simply stunning, I mean holy cow, look at those fucking leaves o.o
Its great how you put he focus on the love between the fox and the wolf, while the threat of the really evil looking wolves is rather small in comparison. Their design is really cool with all those glowy eyes and the distorted bodies. I can feel how the main characters are drifting away into the peaceful blue.

Ah! Yes, I've noticed that they're similar to them.

The red lines on them were supposed to be eyes that pop up all over, but I guess they didn't come out that way. :'D I should have made that more clear… Oh well.
I noticed after I had done the lineart that it looked like them, so I tried to make these different as much as I could, because I had no time to fix it further. :c
