Lula is Kayan's older sister, she was one of the most talented plumbers and the leader of the Orion squad.
Everything was going great until in the last mission of Orion Squad, two squad members, Crawnch and Chirp, sacrificed their lives to save others. This incident caused a bad emotional blow to Lula.
Orion squad ended and the remaining members left to move on with their lives.
After a long period of depression, Lula finally realized that she shouldn't let her friends' sacrifice go in vain and they didn't want her to give up anything, so she decided to rejoin the Plumbers and became part of the Alpha Squad.
