Description This is my first Gnome Shell theme.
It is a steampunk theme
I've tested it with gnome 3.0 on lmde with gnome 3
Where I install it on mine is in the .theme folder.
This is just the shell I will hopefully get time to get a gtk and metacity file theme togeather to match this soon.
The wallpaper I used for this theme can be found at

Enjoy

License is GPL

changelog:
I added three middle panel images now (I explain it in the download read me thats included and how to change it in the css file if you want to) this way you can pick what size you want.

changelog July 18 2011:
I made changes in the shell, added a bar across that links up chains to hold up the dash panel (well the illusion anyhow), added the gtk and metacity files, plus some extras that I made and the cbowman57 made.

For all fedora uses:
There seems to be an issue with the metacity file in the top tiling I did, it looks to short, this is in all themes it looks like, I don't know why it does this only in fedora or I guess any fedora based distro, but it does.
It is a quick fix though just open the metacity xml file in gedit and look for the tile images that have a height of 30 or 31 (I think there is only 4 of each (theres only 2 that do this in a set so it is eight in total) change them to 34 instead and it will look fine again.
I will fix this in the update to gnome 3.2 and add two separate folders one for debian based and one for fedora based distros.

CBowman made a nice gtk3 for this, you can get it here
[link]
along with a nice shell

As soon as someone updates this shell to gnome 3.2 I'll add the link to where you can get it at.

Installed this just now, looks great! Do you have a matching menu/task bar to go with it?

samriggs In reply to Starbug [2013-03-23 06:25:35 +0000 UTC]

Hi starbug look at cbowmans link below this is the old gnome 3.2 version which is outdated, cbowman made a 3.4 version of it and did a great job of it.
I'll be making a new cinnamon theme to go with the new steampunk blimp city theme I made with gtk and metacity to go with it later on soon as I get some more time.
Sam
PS I dont use gnome 3.4 at all only cinnamon so I won't be making anymore gnome 3.4 themes for that shell only cinnamon but I'll still be making the odd gtk and metacity and maybe throw in the odd xfce frame to go with those for those who use xfce.

Starbug In reply to samriggs [2013-03-24 03:44:48 +0000 UTC]

Cool, that works for me. I look forward to a Cinnamon with matching GTK & metacity. I'm currently studying the themes I have and trying to figure them out. I'd love to be able to make a theme and submit it to the masses. I have some ideas that would be cool/fun to implement.

...as I'm sitting here eating a box of strawberries, maybe a strawberry theme would be fun too, like the (not-so-)Dead Butterflies theme somebody made (gnome-look or LinuxMint-art?).

Hey Sam,

We bypassed 3.2 & went straight to 3.4.

I hope I've done it justice [link]

I'll miss this theme

sorry about this, I have been trying to find someone to take it and update it to 3.2 but so far no takers, hopefully someone will do it soon, I can't anymore because I switched to xfce for now because it works better for me as a workstation, so until I get gnome back on I can't update it.
So anyone wants to update this please do it and just send me the link and I'll add to this section.

I wanted to add, I use the Buuf Icons with this theme, but I'm missing a good mouse cursor for it. Any suggestions?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

samriggs In reply to slaapliedje [2011-09-29 05:12:44 +0000 UTC]

non yet I'm thinking of making three sets of icons and cursors if I can figure out how to make cursors, never really looked into that yet, but icons just take a lot of time to make a full set.
I am going to eventually make a steampunk icon set (full and complete or as much as possible, I seen one some where but it wasn't to my liking, one icon set for my heavy metal theme (mainly because that is my base theme I mainly use when I am not into a steampunk mood lol) and one for my wife and her spacey pink theme I made for her.
So it will take a while before any of this comes out plus I want to make a cairo dock for each and if I ever get time maybe an avant dock theme but I use cairo so maybe someone can hack one for me if I get the cairo ones made and change them over to avant.

Technically, gnome 3.2 was released today! But then I know most distributions won't have it quite yet, I'm sure Arch Linux will have it packaged in no time (I know already you could add the gnome-unstable branch and get it, but last time I tried that, I ended up re-installing... but then my gnome 3.0 was messed up anyhow).

Looking forward to it, I absolutely love this theme.

Ya I'll wait until it comes down the pipeline I need it to change these themes over also but it gives me a break

Just installed this theme under Arch Linux, and I have to say it is AWESOME!

Only two issues I have found with it (haven't been able to find a way to fix it myself) and that would be the font color when you go to system settings. It shows up as gray background, and the tan color you use for the text. So it's very unreadable.

The other one is the fonts on the notification bar at the bottom. It's readable, but the font should be darker than gray. Otherwise, this totally reminds me of some of the awesome themes that Enlightenment had back in the DR.13 days when I first started using Linux!

samriggs In reply to slaapliedje [2011-09-28 18:25:05 +0000 UTC]

Thanks glad you like it, I am going to change the fonts colors and some of the gtk also to make it better, but I am waiting for the new gnome 3.2 to come out because it has a lot of changes coming and I would have to redo this in a month or two when it becomes available, you can go into the gtk if you like and change the font colors as you see fit, but once the new gnome 3.2 is here there is probably going to be issues with all my gnome 3 themes working properly because there are so many changes. If you can be patient I'll be redoing this whole theme as soon as I see what needs changing and will be adding more also to make it a lot better looking and a lot more steampunk through out the whole theme

is this avilable for gtk2 or kde?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

samriggs In reply to thebarx [2011-09-25 03:47:00 +0000 UTC]

Unfortunatley not, this is a gnome 3 theme with gtk3 but the metacity is useable, plus the gtk2 within it might be able to be useable but not the shell (the main part you see)
you might want to try an old theme I made long ago it is made for gtk2 and has a steampunk metacity in it.
You can get it here [link]

thebarx In reply to samriggs [2011-09-25 11:37:35 +0000 UTC]

Thank you very much, the gtk2 theme seems cool. Gtk3 have already no way to modify keys that interact with the window. At the momento Gnome-shell is usless to use 3D programs. I use Autodesk Maya very much for school and the alt and super key has any other functions I canΒΏt change in gnome-shell, so I need to work in enviroments like openbox or Kde ot work better :/

BTW thanx for the theme xD

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

samriggs In reply to thebarx [2011-09-26 03:17:15 +0000 UTC]

No problem, if you like the gtk2 theme in this one you probably can tear it out along with the metacity file and just make a gtk2 out of it just change the info in the index file, it might work as is that is if your using metacity, if not you'll have to make one that suits your needs but the gtk2 in this one should work hopefully.

looks cool with that wallpaper, I'll be fixing the wobbliness in the menus and dashpanel and some of the colors in the gtk so they don't blend in so much that you can't read them, I'm just waiting to see what changes come with gnome 3.2 first because there might have to be changes then what I have to do because of it.

ilnanny In reply to samriggs [2011-09-06 09:38:23 +0000 UTC]

For me, it is excellent, there is no need to adjust, with gnome 3 .....
with 3.2 I do not know ....
what operating system you use?
What size of your monitor is (in pixels)?
I have two monitors(5.4) with a resolution of 1280 x 1024, and I only adjusted the white color of the writing panel looks great ... and that goes very well.
excuse for my bad English.
You have finished the second shell? I remember you were preparing a new ...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

samriggs In reply to ilnanny [2011-09-06 16:35:58 +0000 UTC]

Yup the second shell is done, I still have work to do on the gtk but I am waiting for the new version to come out but it has the SLAVE gtk with some minor changes and I completed the shell and metacity, its ready for download.
Heavy Metal theme can be downloaded here [link]
I use linux mint debian edition with a gnome 3 shell I put in the monitor is 1440 x 900.
Gnome 3.2 is supposed to change a few things in the shell and in the gtk so its sort of a wait and see what happens before making any more themes.

To be honest I am more interested in how you got gnome3 on LMDE, I have been trying since I got LMDE and none of the guides are working for me. :\

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

samriggs In reply to teamcoltra [2011-08-20 20:44:11 +0000 UTC]

Hello teamcoltra I wrote an extremely little tutorial here [link] also go to linux mint forum under this thread:
[link]
It will guide you through everything you need to know.
On page 7 it explains it on page 10 it gives you the extra three repos you need, zero explains it good.
They use xfce lmde in thaat thread, I did the same thing except with lmde gnome instead, I just do not upgrade as stated with the extra repos in there, thats probably where alot of folks go wrong.
If you have any questions about please revert to thaat thread in linux mint, if I see I can help or anyone that has done it already can also help, they are all very capable

Thanks zero, once the withdrawls of not smoking goes away, I'll go over the gtk again and clean it up more.
Unless someone else wants to fool around with it and add it to the download, thats fine also.

did some work on the gtk tonight, hopefully I'll have it done by the end of the week or by the end of the weekend, I'll send it your way to look it over see if theres any changes that need to be done and test the heck out of it to find any bugs or inconsistanties in programs before we upload the whole package if thats alright? Plus I want to try a few more things in the shell part also and that will defenetly need to be tested because it might go wonky with different screen sizes for what I got in mind unless I can code it in different then it won't matter about screen size, maybe you can assist on an icon steampunk theme for this one? what do you think? it will only be a ton of illustrations to do it lol
