Description During the ardennes offensive (december 1944-januari 1945) The germans attacked the Belgian town of Bastogne, this crossroad town was vital to the german's offensive to take the port of antwerp. But the american troops garrisoning the town did not faulter and when the germans ordered them to surrender they refused, bastone's commander, Brigadier General Anthony McAuliffe's answer to the german demand was probably one of the most american answers you could get. "NUTS!"
Despite being outnumbered against a superior enemy, the Americans held. This forced the germans to go around the town in order to continue the offensive which cost them both time and resources they simply could not afford, bastogne was under siege for several days until they were finally relieved by George Patton's 3rd army in the allied counter attack.
Though just one block in the big battle, The american's hold on bastogne severly slowed the germans down which contributed to the halt of the german offensive.

The biggest waste of resources during the end stages of the war.

A vain attempt at repelling the vastly superior forces of the allies with a desperate last-minute gamble.

No. this is based on the actual war. not the game, wars are not based on war games mate, war games are based of war.

Well one could argue for war games in the sense of practice manoeuvres, but then, no plan survives first contact with the enemy...

Or maybe the OKW had access to secret Nazi time-travel technology and DID, in fact, plagiarize their strategy from 21st-Century vidjagames???

And to answer the inevitable question of who would be stupid enough to repeat all the mistakes: RIVER. BARGES.
