The variety of topographical features found across thousands of worlds include many that are disadvantageous to more traditional fighter craft built primarily for use in space and clear atmospheres. On many of the frontier colonies, pirates and rebels utilize jamming fields or natural phenomena to hide. This becomes particularly troublesome when the enemy employs their own gunships and armored vehicles. A high-altitude vessel or long-range fighter would be of little assistance but it is in these scenarios that the Cockatrice shines. Its four rifles launch specially-shaped projectiles at an extremely high velocity, capable of shredding through most standard armor types at a respectable distance. Light vehicles and slower-moving aircraft become easy prey as the large cockpit canopy allows the pilot to target manually with high accuracy. The Cockatrice's sensors also allow for more precision flying when normal visuals are impaired.

Some later variants feature a higher-capacity generator and four small blasters for greater operation time and sustained fire, however they are somewhat less effective against energy-absorbing materials like those used by the Saurians.
