Description The skeleton is made of nylon Plasticanvas sewn together with string, first I started off with crochetting thread, then I ran out and switched to a very thin twine. It took me four tries to figure out a pattern for the helmet part, I was originally planning on melting a sheet into shape but had too many temperature issues with the oven and steaming, and my heat-gun isn't working, so I went the old fashioned rout and just pieced it together. It ended up looking kind of Tron before i put the horns on. The horns were actually a lot easier because they're structure is pretty much exactly the way I built them in Blender when I was making a model of NiGHTS a couple months back.

It's quite light-weight and wearable, I expect it to be pretty comfortable once I line the inside of the cap with cotton. The outside is now going to be covered over with head-liner fabric (that's a thin sheet of open-cell foam-rubber applied to fabric, normally used on the inside of car roofs) which should smooth it out a bit and then I'll have satin over the top. The horns are as far down as I'm going to go with the nylon for now and the rest will be finished out and brought to a point with the headliner fabric and light polyester stuffing in the tips. I planned on also doing the widow's-peak with the foam rather than making it stiff, in the interest of comfort. The skeleton so far stays on my head quite well without any additional ties or support, which is what I was going for and why I made it cover so much and all the way down to my nape.

I will have the full costume finished up in time for Kumoricon on Labor Day weekend, so I'm going to be working on it pretty rapid-fire for the next couple weeks. After I finish up the hat (which I want to do by Friday to make use of a sale at Jo-ann Fabrics) I'll get back to working on the vest, which I started a month ago and then put aside. It and the boots are made out of thick vinyl.

This is amazing!! You said you made this in blender. By chance, do you have a pepakura file of this?

No, this was hand-made with plastic-canvas and twine. This has nothing to do with the 3D model.

Thank you for the reply back! I'm actually making a similar hat (shaco from League of legends) and I'm starting off with a cardboard helmet base, wrap it withΒ  plastic warp.Β  tape it, mark the seam lines and using just regular fabric and interface for the main product. ...I might need to put this on my deviantart. ;;

To smooth the edges and add a little bit of a plush look, I made a lining out of headliner fabric (the foamy stuff that goes on the roof of your car) over the rigid form before I made the final fabric outer layer. That worked really well to give it a nice, soft appearance.

Reala might be a little harder since the tips have kind of a second curve bringing them back in towards the body, but that could probably be accomplished with just the fabric, since they're hanging rather than holding weight... So you could probably use pretty much the same skeleton shape, just turning the tail-bones so that they point out to the side a little more... I'd be happy to draw the shapes I used to make the head-cap if you need them.

That is a NICE hat you made there (also saw the one with the foam)

My girlfriend and I are planning on cosplaying Reala and NiGHTS, you have any pointers to help us realize it?

Don't buy your fabric online... The vinyl I bought did not have a fabric backing... I was not pleased... Hm, let's see... I still have yet to find an ideal chest-gem, I kept my eyes open to the Christmas displays hoping to find an ornament I could cut in half or something but nothing presented itself. If you're comfortable in spandex, for the body-suit I recomend a long-legged, sleeveless unitard, I gave mine a scoop-neck so that I wouldn't have to fuss with a zipper or anything and the shirt part covered it anyway.

Made a note of everything you mentioned.

Now let's see... What part of the costume is the vinyl for? Because depending on where, I may be able to find a replacement in the capital of my island. Two hour drive here we go <_<

About the Gem, I'll do the Christmas ornament idea, if not, then maybe I'll have to make myself a gem. Wood maybe?

And about the body suit Unitard suggestion, where do you think I may be able to find t if not online? What's a scoop neck? (is not a natural english speaker)

Do you have progress pics of the rest of your cosplay that I can use as reference photos?

I used vinyl for the vest and boots and cuffs, because they're very shiney in the more recent games where NiGHTS appears (the original game didn't really have the graphic capabilities for much, so I consider the newer art to be more what was intended) so I'm going to be remaking mine with PVC (costume vinyl) and I'll probably stabilize it (so that it doesn't stretch) with muslin or something.

The problem with making the gem solid is that it needs to be very light weight to not pull on the rest of the costume. I'm trying to find something that is molded plastic with the right shape that I can cut open or something to make a light weight gem out of. If I can't find anything that's hollow plastic, I'll probably try making one out of thick paper.

A 'scoop-neck' means that the 'neck' area of a shirt drops down and is very open instead of being tight around the neck, like this [link] If you have a tight neck on a leotard or unitard then you need to have a zipper in the back to put it on, having the low neck makes it much easier and simpler to make. If you're not planning on making it yourself, then you can order it off-line, spandex is pretty easy, it was the vinyl that was troublesome ordering from the internet because it comes in so many different kinds. Spandex will be mostly the same structure, the differences will be in how shiney it is or how thick it is. The kind of spandex you want for the unitard will be advertized for 'dance or swimwear.' If you want to buy a ready-made unitard, you should look at stores for ballet and dance things.

I don't know where my pictures are... I didn't have my own camera when I was working on it so pictures got scattered around... I'm very bad about remembering to take pictures. I'm going to be remaking the vest and boots soon, and I'll try to remember to post lots of pictures when I do that.
