Description As requested.

The 3D software I used was Modo, but really, any 3D software will do.
Also, my modelling is terrible, since I haven't touched it for nearly a decade, but for this kind of photobashing purposes, I guess it's good enough.

When rendering, you can also render the alpha, the illumination and the surface id, which is a big help in selecting areas when painting later on.
If I had a little foresight, I would have set the green secondary light source in 3D. But I didn't, so I had to paint it in.
Also, if I knew how, I'd have changed the FOV, but I didn't. XD So the comp looks rather boring.

Hope it helps!

thanks for showing your method, its inspiring to see that one can use Zbrush and Photoshop together like this. I want to try this sometimes.
Do you have more artworks in mind which use a similar method? Could you write their name or link to them? I'd like to use them as inspiration, theres a particular scene that I've been thinking about for 10 years and this might be a good method to do it with

You could take a look at the works of Eytan Zana, who is simply amazing at this kind of style.

For me, it's even more impressive now that you showed you made a 3D model first! I think it shows you're giving importance to the underlying construction, and not making stuff up as you go along and hope it will fit somehowΒ Β  (Sure, there are certainly people who know exactly what they're doing without a detailed construction, but hey...)
So: Thanks for sharing this!

sandara In reply to Finsterdrache [2018-03-17 01:57:47 +0000 UTC]

This is a quick and fast way to paint. By blocking out the architectural elements first, you get the correct perspective and angle very easily. It's just a technique.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Finsterdrache In reply to sandara [2018-03-17 21:58:56 +0000 UTC]

I never said it would be bad, or somehting like this. It's just, as I saw the Picture, I don't think there was a model.
And ... easy ... yes, if the drawer CAN model, than it's easy, maybe

sandara In reply to Finsterdrache [2018-03-18 01:19:00 +0000 UTC]

I’m actually glad that you couldn’t tell there was a base model used. It’s not supposed to be obvious.

tamarussia In reply to Finsterdrache [2018-03-16 23:02:30 +0000 UTC]

it is still a whole drawing? lol don't be dense. she uses the model here, yes, but it's used expertly and she still paints over and on top of it to complete the illustration.

don't make it seem like her using a 3D model takes away from the craft of this.

You likely have... It's done very often now, (manga, graphic novels, and book covers) and you would not know if the artist didn't show the process like this.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 2

Rojorana In reply to Darlaimerner [2018-03-17 22:52:22 +0000 UTC]

Of course it depends on what it will be used for, like here where it's only used as a base and going to be painted over, but I must agree with sandara that the model's not that good...
The final piece is a whole other matter though, really cool!

Haha, a lot of my friends and colleagues are modellers and all of my students are way more proficient in 3d than I am. I guess that's why. This model that took me a day to make would take 4 mins for my colleague.
