Hello. Back in 2015 I believe, I had downloaded a bunch of graphics for use in the video game I am developing from several of the royalty free for commercial use clipart websites. One of those images, is the white angel on display here. Back in 2015 I downloaded over thousands of images and its honestly impossible to trace this specific one back to the specific royalty free site I got it from without spending a ton of time, and even then it may not be possible if the image is no longer there.Β
I have been using it on one of the title screens of my game and in my promotional material and game website since I obtained it back in 2015 as it was provided as royalty free for commercial use from one of the many places I get my graphics from.Β
I recently was informed that it might not actually be royalty free, and rather than spend what could amount to a significant amount of time to trace it back to the source, I figured it would be easier to ask you directly since the source who informed me it might not be royalty free also provided a direct link to your site here.
I have two questions:Β
1) Did you put this image on any royalty free clip art sites? Β if you did, then I am covered. However, if you never did that, then wherever I got it from originally wasn't allowed to provide it, which means that I got something I believed was royalty free, but actually was not, which brings me to my next question.
2) if you did not put this image on one of the royalty free clip art sites back in 2015, but it somehow ended up on one of them, because thats how I got it, I would like to continue to use it but I don't want to do so without permission.Β
I am not in a postion to pay for graphics because I am a small one man developer who has been building this game for 5 -years now in my spare time. Eventually the game will be sold commercially but exactly when I do not know.
With that said my question to you is "may I use this image in my game and on my promotional material" as a royalty free image? or must I remove it and use something else?Β
I am happy to credit you for creating the image and including your name and website in the credits area of my game if that is acceptable. If you would rather I remove it and use something else I will do that because i don't want use your artwork without permission. Please let me know. Thanks so much.Β

1) No, I never did, as this was an image commissioned by a company, and they own the rights to it.
2) I'm sorry, but please do not use for commercial purposes.
Please replace it with something else. I'm sure there are plenty of angel images out there that you can purchase royalty for a small fee or is free.

Quick question, you said the company who commissioned it owns the right to it? Does that mean they own the copyright for that image and fully own it? Could they have put it into a royalty free environment back in 2015? Before I begin the time consuming process of removing and replacing everything I want to make sure I follow this out completely. If they might have sold it to a graphics provider (I used tons of them over the years) or are a graphics provider, I want to follow up with the actual owner of the image so I donβt spend unnecessary time.Β
If you are that person who own it and I misunderstood as I read back over your response, then no worries as I said I will remove it. I just want to be thorough and make sure I have all the information and facts before I do.Β

Thanks. I'll take your word for it. Just wanted to be sure before beginning the time consuming process of selecting something else, verifying it with the royalty free site so I don't encounter the same problem again, and then performing the swap outs. Β
