My "Paradise" game project continues to move forward, as I have time.

In this project, my aim is to create a unique and visually compelling world, within a limited, focused scope. The style of the architecture and structures are inspired by art nouveau, art deco, Italian gothic and Moorish fantasy. The concept art can be seen here: fav.me/d37ewdv

My effort includes concept art, modeling, texturing, and then construction within the game engine, including importing and placement, shader development, lighting and lightmapping, and the scripting of a simple puzzle. So far, all 3D and 2D assets have come through smoothly with no performance issues. Feel free to follow my blog for additional updates: sandboxalchemy.posterous.com/

Thanks! It's an old personal project, but a learning endeavor I'm still glad I committed to.

(Interestingly, my skills at matching concept art exactly have been much less in demand in the game industry than I would have thought. Still useful every once and a while, though.)Β Β

Yes, I realized after commenting that it was an older piece. So I checked out a few of your other submissions, and I must say, you have definitely improved since then.
Glad to hear you've gotten work in the industry. You really have the ability for it, at least from what I can tell. I'm just a student though

Thanks! I believe exploration and change is definitely a part of the artist's journey.

However, I would like to mention one thing. When it comes to game development, having access to robust hardware and the latest professional software really makes an enormous difference in the level of quality you can achieve (and the speed at which you can achieve it). This particular project was made on an aging laptop with the cheapest/free tools I could find... some of those tools were great (like Blender)... some less so.

Now that I'm employed in the industry, I canΒ take advantage of tools I wouldn't be able to afford otherwise. And its a lot more enjoyable making stuff!

I think this is important to note, because a lot of young artists struggle with getting good results early on. Part of it is a skill gap, but part of it can also be an "access to tools" gap, especially if you don't have a powerful computer at home for practice and homework assignments, or the latest version of industry software. Unfortunately, most industry professionals don't really factor that into accessing the work of people trying to break into the industry. So it adds to the uphill battle of being taken seriously.

That's all really good advice.
I recently did a project that would've taken me 10 times as long to do if I hadn't recently gotten access to Surface Designer.
Of course, I was completely new to the program and had to rush everything, so the results could've been better. But what you say definitely is true.
Progress is a lot faster when you're working with better tools, and have spent time learning the tools to utilize them as efficiently as you can.
I guess there's a reason why software studios use cost so much, and it's usually because it's the best available

its looking good for a unity scene, compared to something like UDK, but youve made it look great!
from the concept art i think the foliage/plants in the bottom left made it a lot more inviting and homely.

Thanks for the feedback! I definitely want to include the plants as well - I actually intend to go through a plant-creation phase for the entire level later this year.

It is super cool eh? I love Unity, just that code drives me a lil buggy... but I'll get it one day.... the light is slowly starting to come on about if statements

I have found, on average, it takes about nine months to really learn a game engine, and that's presuming you have enough time on your hands to make it a priority. Most students need about three years. So keep plugging away - it'll lead to great things!
