Did I ever tell you, you're extremely versitile? No critique here.... besides how can someone critique on anothers art? how do they know how it is to turn out? Your daughter is beautiful, intelligent and quirky

lol...thanks Sashay. I try. I just seem to want to try everything. You described my daughter very well. She is a blast! She's a big ball of love and fun wrapped up together.

Oh thanks! I'm nervous to start my next drawing. I will be doing a matching portrait of my teenage son. He's my toughest critique, so it should be interesting.

First of all, shake all nervousness from your system. Chin up lady, life is beautiful isn't it? Step up the spirits of creativity and go do that painting. I am sure your son will love it.

wow this is great!
pastel is so hard material to work with......
one tip if you want...that my teacher of portraits always says to me - It's not the hair that make people diferent, real and unique, it is the structure of the bones....so next time work with the muscles and bones more in color and less time with hair.. than your paintings would be even better -.-

SandieBlair In reply to WannabeBane [2010-11-11 22:42:28 +0000 UTC]

Thank you. I appreciate the tip and will try to keep that in mind for my next portrait.

You're welcome,
p.s.
i always repeat that mistake and lost my self in details of hair, no matter how hard i try ,
so one day i sit down and draw my teacher,
i forgot to tell you that he was bold

Minzile [2010-11-08 10:19:47 +0000 UTC]

i don't know your daughter but if i would have to guess i think she has a higher head . some more hair on the top and it looks fine! or maybe it's the face-head proportion (face a bit too big) from the colouring point of view i'd say: don't be shy! use also blues and greens for the face and the hair, shade with complementary colours and give the whole image more depth using also darker colorus. for excample the part where the hair meets her jaw: most of the thime this area is almost black!

but its really a beautiful drawing, those are just some tips to make it perfect. by the way eyes and mouth are so wonderfull!! and i admire how you did her teeth! so lovely

she's absolutely glowing
love it!

i'd only suggest a darker background, to bring out her smile and eyes more.. or different color maybe.. just thinking out loud

She sure is a beauty!
This is fabulous, especially from a first time user of this media (pastels are notoriously difficult)
My husband's reaction ("Damn!")

SandieBlair In reply to KanchanMahon [2010-11-05 20:32:42 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! She's way prettier than I drew her, but it was the best that I could do with the pastels. You are right, they were a bit difficult, but it would have been even worse if I would have known that they are considered difficult! Sometimes it's best not to know. I've used pastels about 3 other times I think in the past, this was just the first time using them in a portrait. I am going to attempt to draw a picture of my son as well so that I have matching portraits. I'm a bit nervous about it. I don't know how to draw a guys skin to look good without looking "pretty". Know what I mean?
Anyway, thanks again.

KanchanMahon In reply to SandieBlair [2010-11-06 16:50:20 +0000 UTC]

Know exactly what you mean. I can't wait to "see" your son, I will certainly feel as if I really saw him considering what a fantastic portrait artist you are.
(PS I am so sure that your daughter is absolutely prettier than anyone can war her, children always are! My 3 all have dA accounts, they are CriedARiver, WhereWeGoFromHere, and Jem4Ever)

SandieBlair In reply to KanchanMahon [2010-11-11 15:25:16 +0000 UTC]

Sorry for the late reply.... I've been working on fixing up this drawing for the past few days. I think it looks a bit better now, but I may take one more picture of it since I have her head at a weird angle now. It's so hard to get a good photo.
I think that it is so cool that you have all 3 of your children on DA. How fun! Such an artistic family!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

KanchanMahon In reply to SandieBlair [2010-11-12 13:03:43 +0000 UTC]

Her head is NOT at a weird angle! You hardly ever give yourself credit!
And yeah, it's cool now that dA and the idea of putting your work out there drew my middle daughter back to drawing, but I think my youngest might be intimidated by her sister's work.
My sister actually told me she never tried art cause I was "so good." WHat a silly way too think, (but that's adolescent thinking for you, esp girls, too much pressure to be perfect.)

I guess the fact that I'm a "Grayscale" artist, renders my opinion worthless. lol That's ok,not the first time. You have a beautiful daughter. Almost as beautiful as mine. I think the tones are great. Her skin has a very youthful and vibrant glow,as do her eyes. I get a very happy, positive vibe, from her expression. For that reason at least,I hope(and assume) it looks just like her. Her hair looks like she may have highlights in it? I think you did the hair very well. It LOOKS like hair. Her eyes are nicely detailed, bright and clear, just what one would expect from a (I assume) teenager. I'm honestly not knowledgeable enough to break it down into minute little details. The best I can do,is tell you what I see. So,that's what I see. A great job!

SandieBlair In reply to Meltin [2010-11-01 14:28:41 +0000 UTC]

Ha! That's where your wrong. Your opinion is never worthless!
Thank you for your input.
Her hair has some natural highlights and the picture was taken out in the sun. I probably went overboard on the different colors in it. She's actually only 10, but she likes to call herself a "preteen". Anyway....I'm glad that you like it. I'm going to try to do a portrait of my 15 year old son next. They are going to be our "school portraits" for this year.

Meltin In reply to SandieBlair [2010-11-01 22:53:52 +0000 UTC]

Thanks.lol I thought her hair was fine. It looked natural to me. Realistic,I guess. Portraits of them both, is a great idea. I might be tempted to do a portrait of my daughter but,I doubt I would get the teeth right.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SandieBlair In reply to Meltin [2010-11-02 17:10:24 +0000 UTC]

Yes! Do a portrait of your daughter! That would be cool. For the first portraits that I drew of my children I took pictures of them with their mouths closed, but smiling. Much easier than drawing teeth!
