Thank you! Really no techniques. It was water on the leaf of a lily plant. I used a Canon 100mm macro lens. It wasn't staged or anything. I just got on the ground and looked at all the leaves from different vantage points and took pictures of the ones with the nicest rain drops.

Very cool! So no flash or anything then?

No, I don't use flash except maybe twice a year! I don't stage. I do need to add saturation sometimes because photos look duller on dA than they do on my laptop and on other sites. Have you ever noticed that? Some look exactly as they should and some, no matter what we do, they're just plain DULL! It drives me crazy!

I have run into that and can tell you how to fix it! When you upload the file, upload it at the size you want to display it at... say 1024px or 1280px wide (I use 1280 for panos and 1024/1000 for standard landscapes) or 720px high for portrait or squares... kills a few birds with one stone doing this, you can enable it to be downloaded and have people not steal your high res work... you will be able to upload the files MUCH quicker... AND, you will be able to select "original size" when your setting up the deviation size which wont mess with your colours. Its when you let dA resize your image that the colours get messed with! It took me a while to figure that out!
Try using the actions =Alex37 made: [link]
This is quick and easy and gives you a sized photo to temporarily save somewhere, upload and delete. Thats how I do it...

The link took me to his Sharpening for the Web article. Is that the correct one?

I'll tell you, your instructions and his are way above my head. I'm just self-taught and I really only know the basics. But, I've saved your message and the link and I'll try to figure it out later.

Thanks for all the time you took to explain this to me.

Yeah it was the right article. It is just a good resource at the bottom with the action that you load into photoshop and it gives you specifically sized outcomes with a nice sharpening effect and colour saturation to suit web. Basically you open the image in photoshop, click on the actions and chose which size you want to end up with.
When I talk about the size thing, you have uploaded all of your photos as full resolution then chose to display them 900 pixels wide. This means that you leave deviantArt to downsize your photo for you. If you downsize the photos to 900 pixels wide before uploading them (using the action you can download from that article) and dont let deviantArt do anything with the size. So basically, once you have finished uploading the file, you get an option for what size you want to display the image at (they call it "fullview size") which has a dropdown menu beside it to chose from sizes. You seem to always chose 900 in this. So now, for instance, you have uploaded a 1000 pixel wide image using the photoshop action, instead of chosing to display it 900 pixels wide in fullview, chose "original Size" which will have the size of the file you uploaded - say (1000 x 701 pixels).
Hope that helps. Im sorry if its all confusing!

Yes, it does help! I'll look into doing it as soon as I have time. Thanks a lot for all your help. I've been choosing the 900 size lately because, with the updated page dA gave us recently, the larger sizes don't fit and people have to scroll to see the whole image.

Yeah I just go off my 15" screen and 1024 wide by 720 high is about the max... Do you understand about resizing the file rather than letting dA resizing it for you? That is where your saturation goes.

Yes, I actually do as I've had to resize to upload self-portraits for profiles. And I did teach myself how to do it---which was easy in PS. Some of what you explained, I don't understand, BUT, once I get into it, I'm pretty sure I will. You're the first person, by the way, to explain why my photos come out dull. Most people say, "Mine do too. I wonder why?" So, thanks again!

I first noticed it when I clicked on the download button and it appeared more saturated and contrasty. Its quite weird!!
Maybe I should write an article for people to find out about it!

That'd be nice. It's only like that some of the time, by the way. I upload and if it looks like it should, I leave it alone. If it doesn't, I have to click edit, saturate the photo and re-upload.

I forgot about that---when people download, the ones like that will be overly saturated and contrasty. Wow.

Dear god, this is amazing Seriously, my mouth dropped. I love everything about this.

You'll never bore me with water drops haha, water drops in general are quite popular on dA, I believe. No one can get enough of water drops

Thanks! I had so much fun during breaks in the rain today. The problem is, I have too many that I want to upload and I'm afraid I'll bore everyone with a bunch of rain drop photos.
