This is good for what you do, but sorry to say, this one, did you take a step back from looking professional, I think it needs more done to it, it kinda looks unfinished. I this it would look better if you put more detail in, like scratches, small lights and some wires showing. I like your drawings, but hate to say this, but this one let me down.... cause I know you can do better.

What were you after emotion wise with this piece? Is the mech threatenting or protecting? I'm really not clear on the situation.
Art wise, the light seems a little off. I understand that the mech is heading towards a big light source but what about the light cast by those lights behind it? The only glow of light that I can see is coming from the mech's own generaters and not the thing behind it. A little on the dark side of its head would help.
The background, is it snow? I'm thinking that it is because if it's stars then there shouldn't be so many of them with the light intencity. Any light will block that of the stars and reduce the number in the sky that we can see.
I think, if it is snow, you should have a little more streaming in front of the mech. Some of it should be quite clear and bright, just so the mech is interacting with the image and it's suroundings. Also, maybe a little bit of steam rising from the vents would add to it. Anything that big gets hot and in a cold enviroment this will be more noticable.
Any of this useful?

yeah, thanks for that, I was actually in a bad mood at the time of painting this so I guess that reflects the way the piece came out

Catching *AndreeWallin 's quality will only take 3 , max 5 hour of work after you done with your usual work.

As for , it's impossible for me but you may need to learn new techniques and more practice but you're able to do it, i'm sure you have talent and a strong will so dont worry, just keep doing your stuff and let the time handle the rest bro

I think most of the time something looks bad to the artist because they have been staring at it (and similar things) for a long time.

I would suggest trying something completely new, like watercolour painting or drawing in ink. When you have been tied to one type of art for too long, it can make you come out with a lot of work that doesn't feel original to you and doesn't test your abilities enough. Even if you try digital art with a new twist, it can't differ enough in technique, and besides you'd most likely find yourself trying to manufacture a style, which never helps.

As for this particular piece, perhaps it has a little bit too much soft shading to feel mechanical enough. It's still pretty good, but I don't think it holds together that well because it doesn't seem to have a constant style. Actually, it looks like you weren't feeling confident when you were painting it, perhaps.

I think you do what you do very well, but it's worth a change of scene if only to make your work feel more fresh again. Critiques on one piece of work will only get you so far. They don't really help you to improve your style overall.

Anyway keep up the good work.

First off man, this is not bad, but I see things I would have done differently. Im no expert, but here is my two cents.

Doing mechs and things of a tech nature, it is always very helpful to use the selection tools in PS to achieve the hard edges. I learned how incredibly helpful those are by watching leventep and andreewallins video tutorials. Also, it does help to study anatomy, even for mecha style stuff like this. The multiple light sources on this are also kinda bugging me out and the rim lighting on the lower half seems to look more like a stroke you have applied. Last but not least.... texture, texture, texture.... which is something I still struggle with to get right, but you simply have to just play around with it till you get a feel for it.

Also, draw everyday.....even if it is just a quick sketch. It is amazing how the brain starts to flip on switches you didnt realize are there, when you force it to perform a specific task on a regular basis. Simply put, there is no substitute for practice and hard work.....

sangheili117 In reply to dustycrosley [2009-03-14 17:20:43 +0000 UTC]

well I do draw every day and I see your point about using the select tools, I have always thought it wrong to use the pen tool or anything but the paintbrush I guess I should use more tools eh

its just the lighting that is my weakness I feel I can draw and paint fine just bringing it to life is my weak spot.

dustycrosley In reply to sangheili117 [2009-03-14 20:26:46 +0000 UTC]

Ya man dont be afraid to use the tools that PS has to offer. Although, I personally do not prefer the pen tool at all. The selection tools I was referring to, was the polygon lasso and regular lasso tool. Those are very effective means at your disposal, but they should never be used as a crutch or a total substitute for good honest freehand drawing. You my friend are at an advantage, because fact of the matter is, you can draw and draw quite well I might add, so consider the extra "digital trickery" as merely enhancing your work. I see too many people getting into digital art, with no artistic skill and no desire to learn to draw freehand at all and think because they have Photoshop and all its great features they can just start spitting out great work overnight.

Here are a couple of great vids from Leve and Andree and they both really display great examples of using the lasso tools I have learned alot by watching these....

thank you so much for those links man I think without them I would have been lost. and you are right about people that just use photoshop for its filters and not to show their talent, theres far to many of them.

thanks again

You want a critique huh? Well overall I would say the picture is very nice.

You have good contrast in values that help pull the eye into the piece. The focal point seems to be the head because that is the brightest area of the image. Very nice accents with the ambient light.

The only improvement I would suggest would be to add more hues to your ambient light to pull a little more attention to those areas. This will be picked up by the light reflecting on the mech.

Overall, this is really good work. You shouldn't be disappointed.

thanks for that, although how would you reccommend that I do that I just paint things, Ive never even considered what hues are

dendorrity In reply to sangheili117 [2009-03-14 14:05:41 +0000 UTC]

What I meant by adding hues is adding additional colors to your ambient light. I think this will pull more interest to those areas of the image.

Boy I'd love to be at the wheel of one of those haha!

Let's see... I'm really no good at digital painting.. but I think I have a few tips that might be usefull.
Looks cool to me as it is.. but maybe the starry sky in the back might look better if it wasnt blurry.
Can you imagin a bright starry sky behind him? with focused stars, like you'd see in teh sky when you look at them? But then I look again and it makes me think it's snow.
If it is.. it seems like it's 2dD.. snow needs to be in the back and in the front =]

But still, it looks fine to me =]

Yours looks a lot more pro than mine have you give it a look yet?

The thing is, art isnt supposed to look "professional". It's supposed to look "Your way". =]

If you draw it your way, and put your own feelings into it, it will look good no matter what =]
