Description This is made for #ProjectComment 's sketch jam (#ProjectComment ). We had to come up with our own theme, and mine was endangered animals.

50 minutes with the pen tool.
I know it's not good, but I wanted to try to raise a teeny bit of awareness for the axolotl.

Yes, of course it is!
Protect them, they're almost extinct.

This is a lovely piece! I love how sweet it is, and its expression is so cute.

Axolotls are amazing creatures (even their name is amazing!). My sister's class used to have one, back when she was in primary school.

Axolotls are very cute, I can't believe they're so threatened.

Thank you.

And I actually like the style. Reminds me of those cartoons on Noggin.

I know all about these, I have to say, because my biology teacher.. she was a massive fan of these. There were always two in the glass tank that we had in the class, and... yeah, they were pretty cute as they swam about and stuff.

It is a shame, but.. well, is this the case where it's survival of the fittest?

Also, I heard there was a link between these and salamanders.

SanguineEpitaph In reply to 3wyl [2011-08-09 23:28:17 +0000 UTC]

I'm jealous. *-* I wish my bio teacher had some axolotls.

I think it's partially survival of the fittest, but it's not their fault entirely, because they're adapted to living and humans are destroying their only habitats.

They turn into salamanders, I believe.

They are a bit costly, aren't they?

That's true enough. We have largely influenced things too.

Yay!

SanguineEpitaph In reply to 3wyl [2011-08-12 00:34:29 +0000 UTC]

Well, it looks like they're $35 for one juvenile, not too expensive!

That doesn't sound too bad, no.

SanguineEpitaph In reply to 3wyl [2011-08-14 03:55:13 +0000 UTC]

It's more affordable than I assumed, but the website says they're "social animals" and that you should buy 2+.

I love the axolotl.

It was a year or two back, and I was on vacation. I had decided to go to the science museum, and in their aquatic wildlife section they had a tank full of axolotls.

When they suddenly started wriggling around, I was completely shocked. I could have never imagined in a million years that such an interesting animal could possibly exist right here on Earth! It looked like something straight out of science fiction!

To hear that such an entirely fascinating and unique creature is critically endangered fills me with disappointment and contempt. How could any human being not appreciate the axolotl?! What kind of cruel, uncaring, un-empathic heart would you have to possess in order to ignore this magnificent example of nature's miracles?

I hope that one day all of us will rediscover what a wonderful world we live in, and stop this horrendous trend of self-destruction.

This is an amazing comment. I totally agree, and I think that we are slowly waking up to what we are doing to this planet. Hopefully as time goes on we will preserve ourselves and the world around us.
