Description Nocturna, the goddess of night as well as the goddess presiding over the living, a character from the novel Silverwing by Kenneth Oppel. Her wings are so large that they spread across the whole sky and in fact are the night sky. After bats were banished to the night forever, Nocturna gave them the gift of echolocation so that they would be able to thrive in the night. Nocturna is sister to Cama Zotz, the god of the Underworld, where all bats who have died go. Cama Zotz wanted the dead living in his Underworld to return to the living world, and Nocturna met him in his domain to hear his request, but ultimately forbade it. Enraged, Cama Zotz killed her. Her body fell to the ground and sprouted a blazing tree that Cama Zotz could not touch. The tree allowed bats in the Underworld to make a final journey that would take them to their true afterlife, as bats who had died were not meant to stay forever in Cama Zotz's domain.

Maybe I'll draw Zotz next after some practice. He looks pretty cool if I'm imagining him correctly. More of a reptile than a bat, which fits with the dark Underworld he rules over. Even Nocturna might just have taken the shape of a bat to be a familiar figure to those she ruled over. They are both ancient Gods after all.
