Very good photo and great Akitas. I love how the one in the back smiles and the brindle one has a pretty neat coloring.
Agreed, one of favourite breeds. Mine too and since I have my own one, I love them even more. Awesome dogs, love you to death!

Such pretty faces, I really like the one of the brindle dog

People get really confused with the American and the Japanese ones, I don't know why (just read some comment)

There is an Akita that comes in with her owner to my partner's work. Gorgeous dogs, my favourite breed, though sadly rare in my country. Have not managed to track down a breeder who breeds akita inus as opposed to american akita yet

I would tell you to import one from Sweden but went to have a look at your page and saw that you are on the other side of the planet so that would probably be easier said than done ^^

I hope you find a breeder. Or you'll have to become one

There are a couple of breeders, but wither they don't seem to differentiate between the American Akita and the Akita inu and have imported both types and interbred the two, or they breed just the American type. I prefer the Japanese type... Will have to start going to dog shows and asking around!
But yes, New Zealand is quite a difficult country to get interesting pets in (Not allowed ferrets or hamsters, snakes aren't allowed in the country even in zoos, lots of birds and lizards are banned), or to import a relatively 'normal' animal like a dog is also a massive mission because of the biosecurity laws.

Yes, I can imagine. I know a woman in OZ who's imported a few TMs and that's been ALOT of work + very expensive.
But if you ever decide on importing you are not that very far from Japan at least.

It must be American and Japanese Akitas?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SaNNaS In reply to DeingeL [2011-03-01 18:37:54 +0000 UTC]

No, I asked the owner. Both are Japanese Akitas ^^

DeingeL In reply to SaNNaS [2011-03-01 19:21:24 +0000 UTC]

So strange.. I've read FCI standard of this breed. It says: "COLOUR: Red fawn, sesame (red fawn hairs with black tips) brindle and white. All the above mentioned colours except white must have a urajiro (urajiro = whitish coat on the sides of the muzzle, on the cheeks, on the underside of jaw, neck, chest, body and tail and on the inside of the legs."
But owners knows better

SaNNaS In reply to DeingeL [2011-03-03 08:55:43 +0000 UTC]

You know what, looking closer at the pic it almost looks like it's one American and one Japanese.
I could very well have misunderstood the owner (we didn't speak the same language).

SaNNaS In reply to DeingeL [2011-03-03 08:53:25 +0000 UTC]

There are always dogs that doesn't quite meet the standard, in all breeds. But I do think this color (seen on the picture) is permitted since it got a white blaze.
I goggled pictures of brindle Akitas and they all look a bit like this one.
It would be interesting to ask an owner about it

Well, my golden retriever is much bigger, then standard. But I really like it and think, that he looks better, than standard dogs
And this dog looks really beautiful too

Such beautiful dogs, they are one of my favorite breeds! My Grandmother has a chowhow Akita mix, she's the sweetest. You captured their best feature, those little round and warm eyes!

Wow, your grandmother's dog must be beautiful with those two breeds mixed together.

WhisperingWolf [2009-12-08 18:10:53 +0000 UTC]

Oh wow, they really do take your breath away don't they? Stunners!
When working at my dad's kennels a pair came in called Dutch and Daisy - wonderfully beautiful dogs but so badly behaved. They would try to attack any dog that came near them and jumped all over you when you were in the kennel with them (and you know how big and powerful they are!). Such a pity because they really were sweet dogs, despite the bad behaviour

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SaNNaS In reply to WhisperingWolf [2010-01-01 22:13:47 +0000 UTC]

Yes, they are amazingly beautiful dogs. Too bad people don't read up on them before getting them. They fall for their looks. And things will probably become worse now when that new movie comes - the one with Richard Gere and the Akita.

Xenothere [2009-11-19 23:09:45 +0000 UTC]

Are these guys the American variety or the Japanese variety of Akita?

These are the original Akita - the japanese variety.

I like the light one more than the brindle one ^^ I like how clean it looks

NorthWolf151 In reply to SaNNaS [2009-11-27 08:16:42 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, that red looks really clean and it's a beautiful colour too, but brindle owns If I ever can have an akita, it must be brindle-coloured.

I like pictures like that too. I always look twice at a pic with more than one dog. I agree with you - there's something very special about them.
