Initially I had an entirely different concept in mind, but I couldn't let go of this idea that after everything Kubo had gone through his story wasn't finished yet. It bothered me that his aunts were simply killed as an end. This is a story of epic proportions, but at its core it's about family dysfunction so I wanted to imagine Kubo coming to terms with everything that had happened within his family.
