The technique used in the photo here is very good. This is just a little stick and butterfly, but the macro effect gives a bit of an illusion that there is a large insect perched atop a log. Linked to this is the high contrast between the item focused on and the background of the image.

I also enjoy how the translucence of some of the front wing was captured. It lets the observer get a sort of double-image that includes another wing.

I like your color scheme, a lot of brown/green. It'd be solid if it weren't for the little glint on the right wing.

what glint?

Hm, glint was the wrong word. There's two little spots of blue on the butterfly's right wing.

Sorry about the misinterpretation.

ah, well, that's the way I was able to identify the butterfly. A pity those butterflies don't open the full wingspan, and they are quite big actually.

The butterfly has been done many times and I think it takes something special now to make one stand out which is why I marked low on originality. Having said that, I can see what you tried to do, I love the focus and the subtle tones of the background work well with the strong blue and black of the butterfly. I almost wish we could see more colour on the insect as I think that would have given it more impact, but as it is I do like the detail on the underneath of it's wing. I would have been tempted to crop it a little to get rid of the gap under the branch, I find that distracting. Great job with the focus and exposure though, I enjoyed the detail on it's face immensely. e.deviantart.com/emoticons/s/s… " width="15" height="15" alt="" title=" (Smile)" />

I got to agree on the more color on the butterfly, but that was the most it opened its wings, lol. (I'm still having a hard time deciphering which species is it.) I'm glad you liked it! I also agree that its far far common to see this type of insect shot, I wanted to try it for myself, lol.

You did a good job of it, I don't really like critiques as I feel they're picking on works negative points. I've actually disabled mine for the time being while I consider if I really want them. I've tried to point out the good and bad in pictures through them and what could be done to improve; in the hope that it's helpful and objective rather than just picky and rude. I hope you found them useful

I found them very useful, I like to get to know where is it that I'm not good, so thank you very much!!

The thing is though, art is subjective. Yes we can be told about the rule of thirds and we can improve technically etc, but really it's just about being proud of something you've done and it being a bonus that other people like it too. You're a fantastic photographer and you'll have some things you're better at than others, like everyone; but you can always be proud of your achievements

Wonderful shot. I love how the blurred background brings the wing color out.

On another note maybe its not a butterfly, but a moth.
