Thomas Edison had just compleated 5 days and nights in a continued effort to perfect the Phonograph, June 16,1888. The cylinders were made of steric, beeswax, and ceresine, later improved with a aluminum based compound. I own The North American Phonograph Co. and still make these records. This is my favorite Edison picture

Hey no kidding! Wow, it always amazes me the people I meet on here. My Stepmother also had a small record studio.
I heard Edison had a real mental issue with the flat-disc records. The idea being that the spiral groove going around the cylinder is more constant than the flat spiral because the speed is not exactly constant. i.e. one complete revolution in the middle equals a smaller distance than out at the edge somewhere (as far as the needle is concerned). In the end, the flat ones won over because not because anyone could tell the difference but because they are easier to store and easier to put artwork on.
I always assumed that the record cylinders were made of some kind of ceramic.

Shawn,
I like your latest painting! Reminds me of your dad from years ago also. I will have to check on deviantart more often and possibly upload some of my pictures. Say hi to your mom and Jeri.
