Description The kerbstone in front of Newgrange Passage grave. Features the famous triple spiral design (Life, death, rebirth??)
This site is over 5000 years old, and the roof box over the doorway still works. Every December 21st (winter solstice), sunlight enters throught the roofbox and lights up the chamber. The beam o light reaches a stone basin at the end of the recess. The light lasts for 17 mins then leaves

I couldn't believe it when my art teacher told me the class wasn't going to to see it!
I've wanted to go since I was 8!

And really nice shot, it's one of the first that I've actually been able to see the markings properly!

Beautiful, I love the contrast of soft flowing lines (the carvings and the outline of the stone) with the angular shape of the walls and rocks from which they're made. Just stunning! I imagine there must be an incredible 'feeling' of the history they hold; the people that made these places so long ago; the work that went into them and the importance of such places to these people. I wish there were such old sites here in New Zealand.

Ahh i cannot describe the feeling of this place, it really is amazing ^_^ Inside it today are little carvings of peoples names from the 1800's, it actually really adds to it Hopefully these old sites will still be here in the future...(considering they want to build a new road very close to it...)

I can imagine I'd love to visit some of these places some day, fingers crossed they're still there! Gosh people (governments/councils) can be incredibly stupid cant they?!

Not during the solstice, but yeah. Also hit up Emhain Macha, but the touristy-bit was closed at the time.

O i would hugly encourage a trip there. Its brilliant
The killing thing to me now is that there trying to build a road about 500 yards from the mound...that will do serious damage to the site

Its older that the pyramids in Egypt, and nobody would dare build a road only yards away from that. Same with Stonehenge or The Coliseum. They even want to build a road at the Hill of Tara...Ireland's got some stupid people running it.....
