Born on the remote world of Kal'Shebbol, Rael Hannad was overlooked by the Jedi Order prior to their downfall at the hands of the Galactic Empire. When he came of age, he left home to escape the poverty of his home and make a name for himself. He found his opportunity by enlisting in the Imperial Army, where his latent Force sensitivity and courage allowed him to rise through the ranks. By the time he made Captain, his abilities were exposed and revealed to Emperor Palpatine. However, instead of being arrested or killed, he was recruited and intensely trained. Later, he was given the title of Emperor's Hand, promoted to Major, and reassigned to Imperial Intelligence. Working behind the scenes to eliminate corrupt and disloyal elements in the Army, he served capably and faithfully until the Battle of Endor. After learning of Palpatine's death, he resigned and disappeared.

Several years later, Mara Jade Skywalker, a Jedi Knight and former Emperor's Hand herself, encountered Hannad on Ukio. He was working security for a large agro-combine on the planet's northern hemisphere. After helping him fend off a raiding party led by Lady Maris Elegin, the granddaughter of the infamous pirate queen Q'anah, she was able to convince him to return to Naboo and meet with her husband Luke Skywalker, the leader of the New Jedi Order. Finding merit in his words, he agreed to join the ranks of the Jedi on a part-time basis.
