Description I recently took this image at Bridal Veil Falls, on Manitoulin Island. This time of year the big steelheads (rainbow trout) come inland from the great lakes to spawn in the rivers and streams where they themselves were born. Many of the fish die in the process and their carcasses provide vital nutrience and food for the surrounding wildlife. On the Island, however, there are no bears and very few larger carnivores to feast on the dead fish, leaving the carcases to pile up.... and STINK. Oh my god, do they ever STINK. It's an unbelievably putrid smell and when the wind blows the right way, it's all I could do not to vomit on my camera. I did my best to not include any rotting, stinking fish guts in this picture, I feel that would have take away from the composition of the image. That was a free photography tip: fish guts, avoid them!
