Description July 2010 Update
This has been refined a bit more. I've made it shorter and reinforced all the connections to make them stronger. It's a lot better than it was but it still requires two hands when holding it any other way but up.

For ~Kesshomaru1689 's Sailor Saturn costume, commissioned by *Pinkachu06

The staff is PVC pipe that screws apart in two places. The fancy bits are made from foam covered in joint compound and polyacrylic. Some of the details are polymer clay. I spray painted it. The bottom and top attach via a PVC coupling. There is a quarter epoxied to the bottom to reinforce it because I am sure it will hit the ground a lot.

Its adjusted height is about 85" (7 feet - 216 cm) tall. (I'm about 5'4" for comparison)

At this time I am not taking any further commissions for large props like this.

If I ever make one of these again, there are LOADS of things I will do differently/better (a larger blade for one, and probably a smaller bottom flare). It was quite a long and arduous learning experience, but in the end I gotta say I'm pretty happy.

Aw thanks! tbh if I did it again, it would be a lot better since I've learned so much since then, but I am proud of it for the time

You should be very proud of it!Β  My only critique is that didn't the actual Glaive have a square/rectangular piece along the shaft?Β  That's all I've got to say on it other than it looks amazing!!

I'm wanting to eventually do a Princess Saturn cosplay, and was thinking of making a glaive. I'm also REALLY new to the world of cosplay and especially prop fabrication, not to mention my budget's almost laughable. Do you have a tutorial anywhere, or do you know of any good ones? Especially if they look as awesome as yours! Thanks a bunch!

Thanks for the compliments! This staff is embarrassing to me now since I've learned a lot more about making them much stronger since then. xDΒ  I don't have any tutorials since I'm pretty new to large prop making myself, but I could give you a few pointers at least. First, I recommend wood instead of PVC. The PVC is light but floppy. The last one I did (Glinda: fav.me/d7itsn8 ) is MUCH more sturdy than the Saturn glaive was.

I drilled holes into the ends of the dowels and put nuts and bolts in them with epoxy. Then I put wooden washers over the nuts and bolts to secure them in place and make a niceish seam. This is a much better mechanical connection than what I'd done with the glaive which relied mostly on the epoxy to hold. For the blade part I carved foam and covered it in joint compound. I still feel like this isn't a terrible idea since it's pretty light, but I think it can still damage easily. If you can do wood for everything, it will be stronger.

I hope that helps a bit!! My friend Heart-of-Amethyst just put this little number together which is INCREDIBLE heart-of-amethyst.deviantart.c… She used a lot of found wood parts and did some cutting, too. I think it's about 205725% more cool than the one I did for sure. xD

Hey, I'll interject too! Β You said your budget is laughable so I assume it's pretty low. Β But honestly, the pieces for the glaive didn't cost too much and I'd say I probably spent under $60 for the entire thing including primer, paint and acrylic sealer. Β And the hardest part for building it for me was definitely the blade because it was quite small and jigsaws are hard to work with if you are new to them.

Sadly, I had a hard time finding tutorials for this piece as well, just a lot of recommendations for what to use to make it. Β I wish you luck on your cosplaying endeavors!

Totally insane! I'm trying to figure out how to make my own. For ease of con sake, I'm thinking PVC and foam and some plywood. <--Prolly not the best idea! ^_^;

I LOVE THIS! <3

I would say if you have to take it apart, wood is best for the staff bit. I am using wood for the next two staff type props I'm going to try to make. The PVC is very wibblywobbly

Foam is alright (it's light!) and if you cover it with plaster or something like that you can make it stronger

No, I'm sorry. I made it almost completely on the fly and I'd probably make it a lot differently now. I can answer some questions for you if you want?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

LadyLilly617 In reply to SarahForde [2012-06-28 17:23:56 +0000 UTC]

Ok thanks. Um what type of screws did you put in the tops and bottoms of the pvc pipes? How you go about ranging the height of the glaive to someone who is 4' 10"?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

SarahForde In reply to LadyLilly617 [2012-06-28 20:39:50 +0000 UTC]

I looked at refs to decide how tall to make it. In most pics it seems like the whole blade part is up over her head.

I used epoxy to set the nuts and bolts inside the PVC. I kind of jammed them in and then sealed them into place. Maybe not the best method, haha but it sorta worked

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

LadyLilly617 In reply to SarahForde [2012-06-29 17:17:26 +0000 UTC]

ok for the blade and the blade holder was that a foam or wood? if so how far in do the slant of the blade need to be? sorry bout all the questions..

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

SarahForde In reply to LadyLilly617 [2012-06-29 19:11:17 +0000 UTC]

It's okay! I used foam covered in joint compound to make it stronger. I carved it to look as close to the pictures as I could but I didn't want to make it too thin because I didn't want it to be too fragile.

I'm working on making one of these for a friend of mine using wood. I've done mostly blade-type prop weapons, so this is a little new for me. Where could i get that kind of foam and how is it attatched to the PVC pipe?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

SarahForde In reply to Chris-LC [2012-06-06 14:25:27 +0000 UTC]

It's been a while since I made this, but I think I got the foam from a craft store. I'd actually recommend the stuff they sell at hardware stores though because it's a bit sturdier. I believe I used glue or epoxy to attach it to the PVC
