Description A crescent moon hand-cut (with a piercing saw) from sheet sterling silver, hammered (to add craters) and polished. This is the first piece of this kind I've made so I'm quite proud of it.

Featured here: [link]

Components used
- Sterling silver sheet
- Sterling silver findings

Edit: 8th of April 2012, updated image now I have a decent macro lens.

The photo was taken with the pendant on it's gift box (viewable here: [link] ),
thanks goes to the following for providing the stock I used to create the printed design:

Pendants the same? Probably not. I don't have access to the right tools at the moment and silver prices are currently really high.

I don't tend to make multiple copies of any particular design either since I don't sell my work, I like things to stay as 'one-offs' and it's more interesting for me if I make different things. There are a however couple of other hand-cut metal pieces in my gallery (including this piece: [link] which was made from the silver left over from making this pendant), aswell as a variety of other jewellery pieces made with different techniques.

How pretty! It's sad that you don't sell anything. But I am a lover of interesting and unique jewelry, keep making wonderful pieces~

Thanks. The reasons I don't sell are:

(a) I'm a student and these pieces are fairly time consuming to make; I'm also not that well myself so I need plenty of rest.
(b) There are so many people out there trying to sell handmade jewellery that it's a very competitive market.
(c) To actually make any profit, the likes of this pendant would end up being pretty expensive. I'd have to charge at least £35-£40 for something like this (just paying for the silver and myself minimum wage for the time spent making it, I'd need to buy my own piercing saws, blades, vice and polishing wheel too) and that can't compete with the mass produced imported market. I was taught how to use a piercing saw etc by a silversmith who used to work for Cartier, he just does commissioned silverwork models now as a sideline to teaching now because he can't compete with the import market.

Also, another reason I can't compete with the imported market is that, although the pendant is only about 4cm long between the 'tips' of the moon, because it's solid silver it's actually a lot heavier than it looks (in fact it might just be heavy enough to need a full hallmark in order to sell legally, in which case that would increase the price further). If you bought something like this from a typical jeweller's chances are it would be electroformed, and therefore hollow inside.

This is beatiful! And it's so refreshing to see that someone finally submitted something ORIGINAL to the Moon Club, and not the same boring old amateur photographs of the frickin' moon.

I saw this and it immediately reminded me of a book series I used to read about a girl named Amy. She wore a crescent moon necklace in the books.

Very nice work. Thanks for reminding me of those books.

How interesting . I don't think I know the books you're talking about though, what are they called (I'm curious now).

They're the Replica books by Marilyn Kaye.

I would be proud of it too! I love the hammered texture, it reminds me of how textured the moon is ^_^

Thanks, that's the main reason I hammered it, to look a little like craters. That and it somehow disguises areas where I haven't cut it perfectly evenly, although for a first attempt at cutting silver sheet, and one of the first times I've used a hand-saw I don't think it's too bad!

I agree! That is one of the great things about hammering, I use the technique all the time to hide little mars and knicks in things ^_-
