Why do I spend so much of my spare time illustrating ATLA fanfics. Sigh. Because they're good, I guess.Embers by Vathara is one heck of a long, complicated, crazy AU of a fic, but it is strangely addictive once you get over everyone constantly being shocked by new discoveries. Great OCs, an attention to backstory and level of research that I find frankly astounding, and of course a huge dose of Zuko.

I love Embers. I'm on chapter 37 right now and already I am dreading ending this fic. Its one of those fics that is so amazing a part of my brain simply HAS to consider it canon. Or a canon that should have been/the novelised and more in depth version of the show.
I have a fic like that for almost every fandom I am in. Until Embers I didn't have one for Avatar. I love Zuko, I love Toph and I love it when people point out the reality of a situation and explore the possibilities. I love the cultural differences and clashes, I love when people point out just how young the Gaang is and how they're not perfect and mature and what not. Vathara pointed out there weaknesses and emphasised them in a way that caused me to be annoyed and frustrated by the Gaang, but never hate them for it. It was realistic, plain and simple.
I love Embers. That's all I have to say.

atm i am up to my eyeballs in a danny phantom art challenge so i probably wont do any avatar stuff in the immediate future, but i do have some vague ideas floating around for both embers and 2y@s and some other misc fics (2nd nature, in his shoes, couple others that i cant title off the top of my head) that i would like to do. im not sure im familiar with shadow of the dragon king (author/gist?) though im fraid no, ursaOzai is not especially my thing.
so i will probs roll back around to avatar, esp when the next book of korra is released, though not super soon, sorry :S

If you want more just ask. Oh and before you read In Darkness you should read Scarlet and Black by Vathara since In Darkness is based on the same premise.

Funny how there's just one comment on Zuko's eyes. 
I been reading Embers for some time now too. And it always surprises me... with everything. But most notable are times when Zuko (or someone else) does something ridiculous or childish and then act as if it was perfectly normal thing to do.

thanks! that whole part in Ba Sing Se when he's getting settled as "Lee the healer's apprentice" is my favorite part so far...though i'm looking forward to the inevitable confrontation coming up between Aang and his motley little crew of yaoren.

Also an Embers addict. Since the first chapter. What can I say, I've been reading Vathara stories for more than 7 years.
Anyway, I think you captured "Lee" well here with how he is looking around like his is not entirely comfortable with the city. And I always enjoy seeing how other people imagine Amaya. I, myself, see her with some silver streaks in her hair coming away from the temples. But she looks the right age and I like that.

Thanks! You know, I have several ideas for things I want to illustrate for the fic, and it was remarkable to me on going back through for references how little she actually describes the OCs' appearances. It leaves a lot of guesswork!

I've reread the story a number of times and I can't recall *any* physical description for her. The only thing I can guess is her age. I *do* know she's been in Ba Sing Se for almost 31 years. I can guess she finished her healer training in her mid teens but that's just conjecture. So, I'd can guess she's 45ish. But, more likely, she's a bit older. I wouldn't have a problem saying she's 50. I don't know when they start to arrange marriages but I wouldn't rule out 13 or 14 even (judging by Yugoda's reaction to Katara's necklace) but the fact that she left after completing her training makes me think she's a bit older. So, I'd say she could be as young as 43 but could be on the young side of 50.

I mean there's general bits and snips. When they first meet her it says she's got dark hair with some grey, and blue eyes. Langxue later notes her skin tone is not as dark as that of the Southern Water Tribe. That's pretty much it.
