Somewhere a continent away a young dark-skinned woman sits behind a simple desk. Her pencil scribbling along the page in front of her. Each stroke bringing the shapes into more detail. The picture resolving itself a little at a time.
“You know it’s not very good”
“Shut Up.”
“You’re just wasting your time.”
“Shut Up!”
“You’d be better off going and playing that new game we just downloaded.”
“SHUT UP!” the artistic girl screams, closing her eyes and breathing heavily.
Several flawed pencil marks ruin her sketch to the point an eraser won’t undo the damage.
She grumbles and flips to a new page, starting fresh once more.
“I hope you weren’t yelling at me.” a new voice says from somewhere behind.
“No… I was just talking.” the mostly pink-haired artist says with a sigh.
“Want to come share my bed tonight? I’ve got a movie and some popcorn.”
“Sure… just let me finish this sketch first.”
“Alright, don’t keep me waiting” the other voice replies, the ever present seductive tint in her voice all but ignored by the artist. The tone having lost its full effectiveness long ago.
The artist shakes her head, a bit of a smile coming onto her face before she returns her attention to the sketchbook. The lines flowing out slowly but surely.
“Better hurry up...” the earlier interrupting voice chimes in.
The pink haired woman growls and presses her fox-like ears down on her head with her hands. Her mismatched eyes blinking several times, the left yellow, and the right blue, at least before the colors suddenly switch places.
“...because I don’t intend to keep her waiting” the pink haired girl says with a smirk before tossing the sketchbook down haphazardly onto the desk and walking downstairs to go meet her movie date, her twin blue and pink striped tails swishing behind her as she walks.
“I really hate you right now.” the earlier and still unseen voice says in suddenly different tone.
Back on the airbase Rina sat, looking out from the upper floor of the control tower. Air Traffic was mostly an automated process, still the antenna and satellites were better off placed atop tall buildings, and those buildings often had pleasant views.
“Alright O’taik, I’ve gotten the gist of things from the recorders.”
At least if you could ignore the fact that the view was pleasant only because it was the office of the Commanding Officer for the base. Rina stiffened up her posture, but kept a blank expression on her face. Still standing wearing nothing, as the towel she had been provided was being worn by the chair she sat upon. Her body an incredibly busty pear shape due to lacking any energy at all to the point of needing to wait for her body to return to its natural fitness after the ordeals of the day.
“Ma’am.”
“Save it. This isn’t the first time you’ve violated the rules on shape-shifting during battle.”
“Permission to speak ma’am?”
“Not yet O’taik. I’ve looked over the reports and once more I’ll say I doubt you’d shed a tear over either of today’s deaths.”
Rina kept her mouth shut.
“I know your situation with Anna M’ellu. Some stupid argument over kill-stealing for a salvage bonus on your first deployment together. Occasional spats, the last of which resulted in you being passed over for second in command in favor of Miss M’ellu. I couldn’t care less personally if you’d stabbed her in the back yourself.”
“Ma’am I”
“You do not have permission to speak” the silver haired woman barked out in militaristic fashion. She cleared her throat then continued “As things are you scored three confirmed take-downs today. A career average of nearly two mechs per battle...”
Rina felt her hopes rising slightly.
“... and a career average of nearly one engagement protocol violation per battle. At one point being kicked from the lineup immediately after gearing up by your squad leader.”
Rina glared at the woman, knowing she could justify that if allowed to speak. Given the silver haired commander refused to give her any opportunity to talk it was clear both sides knew this argument was pointless.
“Now… you can answer my questions, but only the questions I ask. First, how many machines have you taken down that were salvageable?”
“Twenty-one if all three survived today.”
“And if your file here is correct, which I know it is, you’ve now deployed twenty-three times. So let’s do some math, twenty three times two is?”
Rina kept her mouth shut, only to receive a punch to her throat that knocked her on her ass. Rina somewhat thankful for the padding she possessed as a result of being so exhausted.
“Not feeling like math today O’taik?”
“Not particularly Ma’am.” Rina said, a smirk crossing her face at the look the commander gave her.
“You’ve destroyed more mechs than any AEGIS squad member. Worse yet you were involved in the destruction of two FTL ready spacecraft. Directive one, do minimal damage to any worthwhile technology we might salvage. You however have taken out more hardware than any other AEGIS since the directive was established. You refuse to use projectile weapons which has endangered your squadmates on several occasions. The only reason you aren’t drummed out, or locked away is because we’ve never had a problematic person such as yourself survive long enough to matter.”
“Your point?” Rina asked glaring.
The commander started to take another swing at Rina, before stopping when Rina didn’t as much as flinch.
“You are right. I suppose your situation is different from most of the people we recruit isn’t it? Still My point is that command can’t drum you out, you won’t be leaving of your own accord, and we haven’t been able to kill you off what with your name appearing so often in the deployment records. The situation there makes an unfortunate accident something we wish to avoid...”
Rina blinked, realizing the implication of that statement clearly. ‘Crap, they hate me enough to consider assassinating me now?’ she thought, but still she tried to school her features into a neutral mask.
“So the end result is this.” the silver haired woman walked back to her desk and pulled out a folder. Throwing it at Rina without much care, several papers flying loose before falling to the floor.
Rina looked down then started to pick up the scattered papers, one catching her eye.
“Squad commander?”
“I don’t remember giving you permission to speak" the woman said with a glare, before continuing "but yes. Given your situation, the council decided they’d rather stick you into the fire so to speak. Maybe being responsible for the lives of a squad would get you to consider following protocol a bit better. After all if a squad can’t keep salvage coming in they usually are doomed to failure when their equipment requisitions dry up.”
Rina shuffled the papers, looking through the enclosed documents before blinking a few times seeing a green haired kitsune staring back at her from one page, the braids looking almost slutty in Rina’s mind, which said something given the women she knew.
“BaoPing…. Is Ping a family name?”
“No”
She flipped through several other unordered documents before coming to the next page with a profile. Blinking as she saw another double name without a family name, still the picture that looked back at her was more confusing.
“I thought policy was no dyes or contacts for duty photos”
“That’s correct.”
Rina started to open her mouth before closing it, figuring she already knew the answer to the question on the tip of her tongue. She leafed through the rest of the papers, then went back through them again looking confused.
“A problem?”
“There are only two profiles in this.”
“And?”
“Am I going to be recruiting more members?”
“No.”
“Isn’t protocol that squads are deployed in pairs at all times?”
“You are welcome to follow that protocol if you wish, though you will be operating down a woman each time you do.”
Rina ran through the situation in her mind, several scenarios playing out, none of which seemed to give her a good picture. She flipped through the pages once more, organizing the pages back into the initial order before skimming for a detail she noticed she wasn’t seeing.
“Where are we being deployed? I doubt you’d form a second squad on this base.”
“For now you are to gather your belongings and report to the airstrip tomorrow at 0400, you’ll be allowed up to five deployment rations for training in teamwork.”
Rina’s eyes widened at this, knowing that usually squads were lucky to have three if an entirely new squad had to be formed.
“I’m not sure I understand.”
“Figure it out. You’ve got ten hours till you’re out of my hair. Now, I’ll give you one more question, then I expect your naked ass out of here.”
“Who is my new commander?”
“I imagine you’ve heard of my sister, or at least her nickname. The Silverfox.”
Rina blinked, she knew of Silverfox alright, the squads under her command having the fewest deaths before the salvage policies came into effect. After the policy change she had been given command of the salvaged forces, usually only deployed in defense of the colony ship itself. As far as Rina knew the apple fell very far from the tree given her current commander Silvertail’s attitudes towards the deaths of those under her command. She took one more look at the woman, having known of the shared family line, but feeling almost sickened to compare the two. A thought crossing her mind wondering if the elder sister was actually just bolstered in appearances through propaganda.
“Don’t worry O’taik, I’m sure my sister will keep your sorry ass around for at least a while. I’ll even give you a freebie, as far as I know those two she’s assigning to you have been her pet projects for a while.” with that said she shooed Rina out the door.
The morning came far too soon. Rina stashing the last of her few personal belongings in a trunk she kept stored under her bunk on base. Usually AEGIS members only stayed on the base when a ship was registering as within a day’s arrival, or when held on base on call. Most of her squadmates choosing to use their earnings to rent an a4partment or buy a home in one of the neighboring cities, which in turn meant she rarely was bothered staying in her assigned bunk.
It wasn’t much to look at, the room built as if space was a premium, a mattress built into an alcove in the wall, a hole for the tail in the mattress which Rina usually would keep plugged with a pillow as her assets made sleeping on her back somewhat uncomfortable. Overall the room was very spartan especially now that her few belongings were put into her trunk which usually would rest directly under her feet when she slept.
She opened the blast shutters on the window then turned off the light, pulling her trunk out the door. Her figure still somewhat doughy due to her exertions the previous day. She was thus somewhat startled when the trunk’s weight suddenly seemed to vanish and a tall figure walked up next to her.
“You shouldn’t be shape-shifting when you’re on call Mel.”. Rina said with a smirk, looking up at the hard body her partner wore. The woman’s frame built like a powerlifter today, if you excluded the added curves to her hips and bust.
“Eh, I’m not on call, just got back late figured I’d rather crash my bunk and catch the morning transport then waste kilos on a private ride. Of course if I knew my next door neighbor would be making so much noise this morning maybe I’d have thought different.”
“You’re much too light a sleeper.”
“Yeah yeah.”
“So finally get a place? Or are they drumming you out?” Mel asked
“Neither, and guess I’ve been proven right about signing a lease”
“Oh?”
“Promotion.” Rina said calmly.
“Ouch. They really don’t like you do they?” Mel asked, a teasing grin on her face.
“You don’t know the half of it.”
“That bad?” Mel asked, a raised eyebrow.
“Let’s just say that the alternative options weren’t pleasing.”
“Yeah that’s bad. Where you headed?”
Rina blinked then quickly opened her trunk and dug through the details, cursing when she couldn’t find anything.
“Wherever the 0400 transport is loading up. You’d think they’d mention that.”
The two looked around before Mel sighed, putting down the trunk and stretching herself taller once they were outside, glancing around for several moments at the nearby airstrips.
“Well two planes, one’s still unloading, other seems to be getting ready to close their door.” Mel said shrinking back down, her clothes becoming disheveled and stretched by her muscles bulging out once more.
“It’s only 0330 right now, either Silvertail is a real bitch, or it’s the second one.”
Rina sighed, and turned towards the plane that had the door closing, starting to Run. Mel following behind, running at a quick pace, but keeping Rina’s belongings relatively stable. Unfortunately for both the plane raised the ramp before they could make it a hundred meters.
“Guess you better hope it’s the second one” Mel said with a laugh.
They started to walk back before an electric cart drove up to the pair, it's headlights bright in the pre-dawn light.
“Which of you is O’Taik?” asked a bodybuilder looking woman in standard guard armor.
“This one” Mel said with a smirk gesturing to Rina while keeping her grip on the trunk.
“I’m to take you to airstrip 4 for pickup.”
“Ohh, private transport? Ritzy.”
“I know General Silverfox wishes to express her gratitude for taking this position, but you are misunderstanding Ma’am.” the guardswoman said, tacking on the ma’am upon seeing Mel’s AEGIS necklace.
“There’s no plane on airstrip four yet. Something tells me they aren’t landing Mel.” Rina said with a sigh.
“You are mostly correct. Your cargo-pod is waiting at the end of the strip. I’d recommend us being in position and secured before 0400 unless you want a rough ride.”
The drive was relatively quick, even if it was several kilometers to the end of the fourth strip. Rina got a good look at the box wondering why it was so big as they approached. Her question was answered as they pulled up behind the door, revealing the mining laser from the previous day.
“You understand Ma’am that the transport was prearranged, you are just sharing the ride. We need to be stowed and ready for transport in two minutes.” the guardswoman turned to Mel.
“Would you mind taking the cart back to base Ma’am?”
“Sure, no problem.”
The guardswoman saluted Mel then took Rina’s trunk and started to secure it near the laser. Leaving Mel and Rina alone for a few moments while she opened some seats bolted to the side of the cargo box.
“Guess this is goodbye” Rina said with a shrug.
“You’ve got my net info, keep in touch, try not to die.”
“I’d offer you a slot in my squad, could use a good second probably.” Rina said.
“Eh, I doubt you can offer me better than two of six out here… well once we get a new six.”
“One of three, so yeah not likely.”
“Damn girl, new squad and already you’re hunting for a four?”
“Actually I’ve been told there won’t be one.”
“That’s messed up.” Mel said, before lifting Rina and turning her. “You might want to hurry and get those doors shut and buckled in.”
Rina looked around for a few moments before seeing the blinking lights of the approaching craft.
She hurried into the box, pulling the doors till she heard the maglocks click before diving towards her seat. The guardswoman looking calm and not even buckling herself in.
“Our ride is early.” Rina said
“Silverfox rarely allows early when scheduled you’ll find.” the woman said. Rina blinked at this but still hurried into her own seat, starting to buckle. The guardswoman looked at her watch then buckled herself in, holding it up for Rina’s inspection.
Rina blinked a few times knowing the plane had to have gone overhead by now and wondering if it was a slow liftoff or something given it was only several seconds until 0400. Her question was answered as the box suddenly gained rapid lift that would’ve pulled Rina from her seat without the buckles.
“What the hell?”
“They likely circled back when they realized they were early.”
“Over being less than a minute early?”
“It would have been very impolite to our new first of three. The General is very particular about these things” the guardswoman said, and Rina could just hear the emphasis the woman’s tone put on the title.
“So what is your position exactly?”
“I’m Silverfox’s wife.” the woman said casually, unbuckling herself and standing up, moving over to a second trunk.
“Oh. No I meant in the military. Like your guard rank.”
“I’m not a member of the guard. But I imagine you are confused. With how the General has her forces organized... Think of me as equal in rank to a third tier aegis, or a guard platoon leader.” the woman said, pulling out a couple of thermoses from her trunk.
“Would you like Coffee or tea?” the woman asked.
“Uhh.. Coffee” Rina said after a moment’s thought. The woman smiled and handed her one of the thermoses.
For what felt like an hour Rina just sipped and thought to herself. She eventually got up and went back to her trunk, pulling out the documents on her new command.
“I imagine you have several questions.”
“Mostly I’m wondering why I’ve been told I’ve got three members, myself included.”
“In general the two on one strategy is tried and tested for controlling battles in the favor of battle outcome as a whole. Hit and run works for a while, sometimes splitting attention, but just as often the enemy pins down their target, or focuses on eliminating one target so the other is left alone. The guideline worked better when trying to work towards destruction compared to salvage.”
Rina listened then thought for a few moments. “So the idea here would be splitting the attention three ways. Still it doesn’t help against some of the machines which forgo humanoid, or even those machines that favor the front and back design.”
“There is more to it, but much of the strategy is rooted in analysis of field results.”
Rina shook her head, looking back through the file.
“So where are we going to be posted once we finish team-training?”
“I don’t know, the General has kept things close to home. I believe she talked about attaching you to an AEGIS squad during the next incursion, assuming it is possible to get your team in position in time for deployment.”
Rina kept from scoffing at the idea only because the woman had been so pleasant until now. Trying to determine where pirates and slavers would land was a futile game, Various sized AEGIS bases were scattered around the planet, the goal to have one team able to get anywhere reasonably populated inside thirty minutes. As it was most flights took at least an hour to cross one of the continents.
“So I guess I need to talk to General Silverfox then” she said with a sigh, before taking another sip of the somewhat cooled coffee.
“I may be able to answer other questions you might have. At least when it comes to your squadmates.”
“Know them well?”
“I’ve been one of their legal guardians for the past two years.”
Rina raised an eyebrow at that.
“The General trusting me with her daughters?”
“No, they both are wards of the state since their enrollment in the Academy. It would be better to say I was their headmistress and AEGIS studies professor.”
“I wasn’t aware schools offered such a program.”
“We are a special school, and these two were very special cases.”
“Given the drug at a young age? I thought that was against the child soldier regulations.”
“No they have never been given the AEGIS serum. They have just been given a mockup of the standard AEGIS training.”
“I don’t think I understand.” Rina said looking confused before sighing.
“Maybe this would help. As of midnight two days ago both girls reached maturity.”
Rina nodded, having expected this, then turned back to the files. Sure enough BaoPing’s birthday was listed as falling on the fourteenth of the second month. She checked MaiYua’s file again, something standing out.
“Why isn’t MaiYua’s birthday in her file?”
“She was born across days by the colonial calendar system. Depending on the circumstances she was either born on the twelfth or thirteenth.” the woman replied.
Rina raised an eyebrow, it wasn’t unheard of in matters where exact dates were needed for this to happen due to colonial regulations, but usually it implied something along the lines of being born offworld, or perhaps being born on the dateline, but Rina always imagined files would just list the latter day.
“Anything you can tell me about their training?”
“They have covered everything the training camps expect, several times over.”
“But never using the serum for full size training?”
“No, they never used the serum. Also I must inform you it might be best to prepare for landing. It tends to be a bit of a rough ride.” the woman said, smiling still.
Rina wasn’t sure what to make of things, but she stowed her files back in her trunk. Taking another look at the bodybuilder like woman sitting next to her.
“So is the Academy dress code Guardswoman attire?”
“Only for the instructors. We insist on what body they wear at all times, it’s only fair we let our girls wear what clothes they want.”
Rina nodded, blinking as there was only a slight bump signaling touchdown.
“Smooth landing.”
“Well our ride landed with us, so it is no real surprise.”
The two unbuckled and Rina went to get her own trunk, only to be shooed away as the woman picked up both, displaying that even with her heavily muscled physique she was stronger than she looked. Now that it was daylight Rina got a good look at the woman, seeing a few mild burn scars on her tanned arms, the woman’s gold eyes glancing into Rina’s own.
“Thank you Mrs. Silverfox.” Rina said, in an attempt to be pleasant herself.
The two walked between the landing struts of the aircraft, and Rina got a good look at the sleek cargo transport. Their box buckled to the underside among three others, the engines looking space worthy if Rina had any understanding at all of the current aircraft designs. After getting out from under the shadow of the craft she was forced to cover her eyes. Not realizing how dark it had been in the container until out in broad daylight.
She looked around blinking. The runway sitting on a plateau surrounded by several others. The airstrip running a fair distance past a sheer cliff face thanks to a partial bridge like extension. She raised her eyebrows, but turned around to look at the base, blinking at the fact that it seemed there was only a few small buildings and several craters where explosives had clearly altered the landscape.
“What happened here?”
“An orbital bombardment almost a decade ago.”
“Why are we here then?”
“Your training camp is here. The girls were getting settled into their home last I checked.”
Rina looked around a bit deadpan. “Not much to look at here is there?”
A new voice chimed in “Not happy with the decour? I’m sure I could find a nice brig for you instead.”
Rina turned and looked at a silver haired woman, who looked like a more mature miniature version of her previous commander. Both women had faces looking in their twenties, but this woman’s face was a bit more cut, and more importantly the eyes were clearly older, not evidenced by some seeming maturity behind them, as much as the milky white color that signified a lack of her sight. She was dressed in a slightly different uniform, more red in hue then the green of AEGIS command staff. Her build small and very curvy, which was not particularly what Rina had expected. Rina noted the woman’s ears were twitching, but focused finely in on Rina.
“Got anything to say for yourself?”
“First of three, RinaO’taik reporting for duty Ma’am.” Rina said, slipping into procedure and standing straight, deciding to salute anyway just to be safe.
“At ease, and speak freely now.” Silverfox said calmly.
“None of this is what I expected Ma’am. When someone says training camp I assumed a base, maybe a forest and greenery. A lake at least so we could try some aquatic maneuvers.”
“Appearances aren’t everything O’taik, and unless you were planning on brushing up the rest of your squad already has done enough aquatic drills.”
The guardswoman placed the two trunks on the electric cart then walked up and planted a firm kiss on Silvertail’s mouth.
“You are having too much fun keeping her in the dark dearest.” the guardswoman said.
“Maybe you’re right. Let’s see how she handles things.”
The two shared a look Rina felt spoke of bad news before climbing onto the cart. Leaving Rina no choice but to ride next to the trunks in the back. The cart scooted along at a reasonable pace down to end of of the runway, and off onto the traditional taxiway. Rina wondered why their plane had landed just on the main runway, but looking around now she felt it was probably best given it seemed the runway itself was the only part of the airport still maintained, the ride turning bumpy before they drove into one of the undamaged hangars. Rina expected the ride to end there, but instead the cart drove into a small cargo lift which proceeded to descend down… and down… and eventually came out into a large cavern under the plateau.
Rina looked up, seeing several of the ‘craters’ seen from the surface appeared to be skylights in the cavern. The darkened material reducing the amount of light that came in. Apparently the reduction in light was helpful given the greenery present in the underground cavern compared to out among the plateaus. There was even a small lake that probably was about the right size for someone AEGIS sized to use as a swimming pool.
“I get the feeling there is a story here.” Rina said, looking out from the open aired lift shaft.
“More than a few to be honest.” Silverfox said, only to get jabbed in the side by her wife.
Rina glanced forward, and blinked several more times realizing it had taken her this long to notice that the blind woman was driving them. The absurdity of the situation hitting her causing her to start giggling.
“Tell my sister I made you laugh in under a day, it’ll help me win a bet.” Silverfox said smirking.
“Even if you hadn’t I’d do it if you told me that.” Rina said smirking.
The lift reached the cavern’s ground level, and Silverfox drove the cart out, traveling along a small road carved from the caverns stone, at a speed Rina felt was just trying to freak her out given the rough terrain on the road near the lift. It was only a few moments before they were traveling in a straight line the road surrounded by green grass and shrubbery, a small town ahead with several AEGIS vats and lockers standing out in open air, several warehouse sized buildings next to the vats. The cart came to a stop at a warehouse next to the vats.
“This will be your home while you’re stationed here. You’re welcome to redress any part you want. Hell you could build a house inside if you want, just know that this camp will be your official post until your squad is transferred out from under my command.”
“Why exactly is this squad under your command General?”
The guardswoman walked to the back of the cart, taking Rina’s trunk and walking into the warehouse. Rina started to follow, but Silverfox held her arm out blocking Rina’s path, once more the woman’s ears pointed towards Rina before she turned and motioned for Rina to follow.
“You are under my command because all unusual forces fall under my command. This includes experimental teams and personnel.”
“I’m guessing we’re not just an experimental team.” Rina said, catching on to how everything said seemed to be important.
“Good, there’s hope for you yet. As it is I figure meeting your new squadmates will help make things clear.”
The two walked to a neighboring warehouse, and opened a normal sized door. The general motioned for Rina to enter. Rina glanced around, looking at some raised areas which seemed to be furnished somewhat nicely, seeing what seemed an open air bedroom on one of the areas. She noticed a large curtain partitioning half the building, the General leading them up a ramp to the raised area, before walking past the curtain.
Rina should have expected something by how the General kept her ears pointed forward instead of in Rina’s direction, but she was just busy taking in the sights, and noticing the sounds of a movie playing in the background. As they looked down on the area behind the curtain Rina noticed first that it seemed like a bedroom for a giant. She noticed the large projector curtain displaying the movie… and more importantly what kind of movie was on the screen. She turned her eyes away and immediately regretted it as she noticed herself looking at a tangle of limbs spread out over the large bed.
The two figures were at least 7 meters tall, and packed so densely with far too much muscle that meant Rina found herself wondering how they could even move enough to enjoy what they were doing.
“Please tell me they aren’t wasting AEGIS resources on this” Rina said with a groan, recognizing her two new squadmates.
“Not exactly, notice the tails?”
“What about them?” Rina asked, not looking.
“Well there are four of them to start with.” Rina found her attention drawn to the spiral patterns curling around the pair sticking out over a very muscled dark skinned butt with each individual striation on display staring back at her. Her eyes quickly drifted to the left, seeing a half eaten bowl of popcorn.
“I get the feeling there is a lot of explaining I need, maybe we should come back another time.”
“Nonsense.” Silverfox said then yelled. “Hey ladies you’ve got a visitor.”
The green haired titaness looked up at the balcony, slowing her play with her partner, but not stopping.
“Oh hey, new girl. She want to join in?” BaoPing asked, smiling a cheshire grin, while doing something that made the pink-haired titaness squeak.
Rina grumbled then turned around.
“Court Marshal me if you want, but I’ll be waiting outside till they have some clothes on.” Rina said, and walked away.
