Pragmatic, cunning, and ruthless rhetoric leaders of large empires (Viltrumite Empire and Decepticons, respectively) desire to preserve their kind (Viltrumites and Cybertronians, etc) for glory.

Both battled on their home planets (Viltrum and Cybertron, respectively) as gladiators which became the hallmark of their upbringing to Tyrannical warmongers; Their tyrannical upbringing is an effect of the world they live in (Viltrumites are a seasoned warrior race where the firm stand and the weak fall, whereas Cybertron authority being largely unjust and corrupt during the Golden Age of Cybertron.)

Both came into leadership following wars (Viltrumite War and the War for Cybertron) and led their kind that raised them to conquer planets to scavenge and harvest their resources. In the hopes of restoring and preserving their people, and bring the planet back to it’s former glory.

Later, both would lead their factions to Earth due to their compatible resources (DNA and Energon, respectively).

Their antagonistic ideals gave rise to a rebel alliance (Coalition of Planets and Autobots, respectively), in which both eventually become responsible for killing their opposing faction's wise, old, leaders (Thaedus and Optimus Prime, respectively) for threatening their idealistic ways. And the war between planets became so fierce that it endangered not only Earth but their own homes they swore to fight for.

Both share a strong relationship with a former member of their kind that defected from their empire out of remorse for their actions, as well as the extreme, brutal nature of their pragmatic ideals (Omni-Man and Jetfire, respectively).

Both also are responsible for developing sub-units of their factions (Thraxans and Combaticons, respectively).

Both share a common history of defecting from their citizenship after their exile from their factions; Thragg defected to the planet Thraxa and Megatron renounces his allegiance to the Decepticons and becomes a temporary Autobot in some stories.
