This is good! I just downloaded Blender, and I hate using tutorials (I do a lot better if I figure things out for myself.) And I found the sculpting tool, but then I had to close it out to restart my computer, and genius me forgot where I found it at. XD I'm still learning though.

Hello, I know it's none of my business, but I noticed your comment as I was about to write my compliments.
I just wanted to say that, if you look at the image, you can see that it took her a lot of time to work on this; I, using animation and creation programs such as this one, know how tedious a task this can be. Not to be rude, but to even consider asking her to do a request is a little arrogant.
If you knew them personally, it may/would be a different situation but I can't say I believe that's the case.
If you really respect this artist, or any other, you should only ask if they're open to commissions (or trades). If you can't afford one, you shouldn't ask; otherwise ask if any contests would be available in the future that would give you a chance at receiving such prize as something like this.
Sorry, again, for sounding mean and like a White Knight...I don't even know this artist, this is the first thing I've ever seen by them; I would say this to anyone who'd asked the same. Just thought I could give you a little friendly advice for future reference, since doing things like this can hurt the artists feelings, or make them angry.
Good day to you!

LOL. I know, blender is hard because they don't really have a real manual u__u. You might want to check this out. [link] It helped me a lot : )

Is Blender the name of the software? I've never heard of that. Is it intense? I only know how to use Maya, and that junk is ridiculously hard.

sashas In reply to moth-eatn [2009-06-04 02:20:09 +0000 UTC]
Yes, Blender is the name of the software. You can find info here: [link] It stacks up pretty well with Maya and such to be free: [link]
Mm, yes. I think you did your watermelon tree thing in Maya and the robot flying/swimming(I can't recall.) Those were good : ) I think I still have a soft spot for the 2d animation of the melon tree though
My friend used Maya for her class, and I would help her because the 3d environments are similar and the sculpting tools, knives, subdivides/whatever... Blender is harder to understand at first, because the organization of menus seems... well, retarded when you start out, but after a while, it makes sense. If you've done work with Maya, though, I don't think understanding it will be too difficult. I had never used an 3d program before using Blender.
Anyway, I enjoy and recommend it.

Sweet, man. Sounds nice enough. And I know what you mean about the 2D animation, yo. 3D just doesn't have the same energy and life to me.

Sasha, that's amazing!!
Is it complicated to animate like that? >: How do you 'sculpt' the model? Cause I hear it requires a lot of math, in a way. Dx *sucks at math*

sashas In reply to owdof [2009-06-04 00:33:57 +0000 UTC]
Thank you. Har har, your avatar is so cute : )
Eh, I suppose there is some math involved in the timing and such, but as far as modeling... You don't really need it. I do the editing in a visual environment. No numbers involved.
There are some people who do scripting and such in python, which requires some programming, but I'm hoping to not need to learn that. XD

Ah, yes. I see in your update that you use a wire frame to shape your model? :3 It seems like so much fun! I'd download it in a heartbeat, but I cant even make a 2D animation on flash, what more a 3D one? xD;;
--Quick question, does it use up a lot of space and require the same amount of processing speed as photoshop? o-o (or more?)

b-b'awww. ;w; You fill me with motivation and confidence. -cling-
omg, you have no idea how happy I am to hear that! -flails- I think I'll try it out, but first.. I gotta read up on how the thing works. xD;;
ANOTHER QUESTION, if I may, how do you apply 'color' like skin tones and stuff to your model? ;w; (I'm sorry I bombard you with questions all the time. xD)

sashas In reply to owdof [2009-06-10 02:50:06 +0000 UTC]
LOL, no problem.
There's a lot of tutorials on youtube and on the blender.org site saying how the interface works. Also check out the blender wiki: [link]
Here's the blender wiki showing how to add texture/color --> [link] If you don't understand anything, just ask and I'll try to help : )

It's going well so far, by the look if it. The only thing I've ever done in 3D is a wine glass, this is far cooler. So you're going to animate it when you've finished then?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
sashas In reply to CarmillaPixel [2009-06-04 00:27:33 +0000 UTC]
Thank ya. I probably should have done something easier... LOL, I never even learned to make a glass XD Oh well, I figure the more complex, the more stuff I'll get to learn.
Yep, I'll be animating it. I've got a few animator friends so perhaps that can give me suggestions when I get to that stage. : )

CarmillaPixel In reply to sashas [2009-06-06 09:40:17 +0000 UTC]
Nah, it's more fun to do complcated things. I just did a wineglass because we were instructed to. May I say that it's looking very good at the moment.
I'm sure it will be fantastic. It's always useful to have friends in the know. :]

Looks pretty good so far! I've never used blender(I use Maya), but I heard it's free and I've read about some indy films that are using it. Does Blender have a hair app? That looks like it'll be the craziest part to model.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
sashas In reply to absoloot [2009-06-04 00:22:35 +0000 UTC]
Thanks : ) Yes, blender is free. There have been a number of indie films done in it. The major downside to blender is that it lacks documentation, manuals, and the like. I does, however have a strong community that shares how they do things. You can use Blender to do hair: [link] & [link] You can use blenders particle system to render hair, control the strands, control curls, etc.

absoloot In reply to sashas [2009-06-04 03:20:15 +0000 UTC]
Nice! Looks like a pretty complex particle system. I should check Blender out some time. I'm pretty happy with Maya, but it doesn't hurt to learn another program.

you kept having turn the model off and on in oder to get the forms right like in photoshop and inking?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
sashas In reply to freakdearts [2009-06-03 03:00:02 +0000 UTC]
In blender, you can switch between solid mode and wire-frame mode by pressing Z. In wire-frame, you can see through the object and continue to edit the object. So, you don't have to turn the model completely 'off' to shape things correctly.

Mm, I don't think I'll be keeping it painterly; The Rendering engine will do the shading/stuff for me, and I don't really know how to make it look like that in Blender. Glad you like it thus far.
I think most universities will be using Autodesk/Maya, but since Blender is very similar in it's capabilities, it's always nice to try it out. You can try out Blender for free here: [link] It works with all major operating systems.
I'll post whatever I learn as I learn it. : )

I go to a general university as well. We don't have an animation department under our art school but there are some Maya classes under the theater school (for game/special effects.) I have too many credits to take, so I'm just teaching myself : )
blenderartists.org has some very helpful forums as well : )

yeah, i finished hig school in a professional multimedia course, so we used 3d programs like blender, bryce and poser(i have 3d studio max...but never learned how to use it) ...i wanted maya but anyway xD it was a pain...we had to do a house in 3d...i made a very very very very simple thing xD and i olny used blender to to a table and a chair xDD
yeah it look's good...and i know what is to work with 3d, so i can see the effort on it..and i imagine that it must be hard to work with =__=

Yeah, I want to try out Maya, my friend has a version of it for mac, and I'm envious. T__T I also just like the program because it is called Maya, my sister's name XD Anyway, It's really cool that your high school would have that sort of training.
My friend Yue had to make a house for her project as well with a little snow person in front. I actually helped her with some of her projects, because Maya and Blender are sort of similar in how you model stuff, but Blender's tools are, I think, harder to find...
I know, 3d is so much harder than it looks ><
