Description when i look at this shot it makes me realise what a unique landscape dartmoor is....
hard eroded plugs of granite that sit ....essentially on a peat bog....
This shot is typical of a dartmoor tor...granite stacks of character that jutt from the moorland landscape that surrounds them...
i walked about 5 miles to this tor....it is on the edge of the military firing range...when i got there i noticed a large bag of rubbish stuffed between the rocks ....Watern tor is outside the range area...i could not believe soldiers had left this there....so i checked it out and found a document from a particular army unit...a document pertaining to operations in afghanistan ...
so i was left with no other option other than to carry this bag of rubbish off the moor...needless to say i contacted the commanding officer running the training area on dartmoor....
The unit were brought back to clean up their mess...and i had an apology from the officer in charge of the exercise....

Lovely shot - I really like how the warm orange of the grass and stones contrasts the blue sky. I fear one day, I'll have to see for myself what a beautiful spot Dartmoor is!

Oh and in other news I found an OS map being used by the forces on Saturday, they must have left it at a rest point and forgottent it. Theye were doing a 50 mile hike around the moor with 2 camping points and 15 checkpoints. Free waterproof map, bit of meths and it was as good as new

if anyone one of us had left so much as a match on dartmoor in my days we would have been ran up and down every hill on the moor...its just ridiculously unprofessional....and to loose a map!!!...but as you say good for you....

ha yeah, I kind of like to think that there were a couple of them relying on the same map and they realised a few miles away that it was lost!

It's nice Steve, probably the best way to shoot it in that light, although there are more compelling compositions about

im about in devon and cornwall at the moment with friends in the tavy area, went out to minions yesterday, took a walk to the cheese wring, awsome place to shoot with a moody sky and if youve not been its well worth it, grazing sheep and cattle too and maybe a rock climber.

Excellent capture Stephen, really like the light and shadows on this, as for the litter, its beyond me why people think its okay to just leave it.

That's crazy! So did you also get sworn to secrecy regarding those documents?

sassaputzin In reply to GregArps [2010-09-18 09:19:45 +0000 UTC]

not really...they took it quite seriously and got the unit back to clear up after themselves which i felt quite chuffed about...

Haha yea and fair enough too. I'm definitely not a fan of going out shooting and finding rubbish over the place...
