Description
This is actually the first lake picture I've ever taken, but this time it's in b&w. It was taken with a Kodak Easyshare point-and-click camera. This was the first official digital camera I've ever purchased. It's been long since broken though. Anyway, I thought it made a nice greyscale photo as I was looking at some of my older deviations. I hope you enjoy it!

P.S. Unfortunately deviantArt compresses it so it doesn't look at sharp as it originally did. I'm not sure why but I'm noticing this with the new changes. I've included a link to my flickr image for better quality. Flickr

I think the black and white suits it, makes it feel kind of remote & quietly abandoned, I suppose. I also like what it does to the brush near the shore.

I sometimes think about posting some of my old photos (self-developing Polaroids is what I started with). It can be interesting to juxtapose old stuff with the new from time to time, lets others see how your techniques have developed. Thank you for sharing this with us.

Thank you very much!

I think you should post some of your old photos. I would be very interested in seeing them!

This is a great composition, rule of 3rds is used here , you were trying to show the shoreline and you succeded. if you had panned left more it would not have shown the shoreline effectively, LOVE the dead bush in the middle it shows good contrast. all in all a very balanced shot that's pleasing to look at

Hmm, not sure if I like the b&w for this one. It seems to lose a lot of life moving from color to black and white. I think that if in the photo you had panned left and gotten the range of values on the lake surface and in the sky and trees across from it it would have been better. There's a very nice and smooth gradient on the surface of the water that you can see in the photo. I think that would have made a better subject on this one. So I like it, but in color, or else in b&w panned left.

I like it in black and white. I'm not saying I like it better or worse. But I like it. And you are criticizing a photo that was taken many years ago. Can you keep that in mind?

Well the photo is new to me is all, and I'm not trying to be deconstructive. I just thought that there was an opportunity for an even better photo! As photographers, we have to train our eye to see opportunities to improve our photos, right? That's all I meant. Sorry if I was harsh.

Going on galleries alone, I think she is far ahead of the curve compared to you on the trained eye. I was going through this gallery admiring art and to see such harsh comments/critiques from you on several pictures (even if unintentional) makes me really sad. Sit back and enjoy the art, not pick it apart.

I am sorry if I am crossing the line *sara-satellite but this makes me sad and upset. If you were a professional *NemoNameless that is one thing, but you are a hobbyist and not one nearly as good as her, you may enjoy being critiqued but not everyone does. Step off!

Hey! Why's everyone getting so upset? All I did was try to help a friend improve. I would gladly accept constructive criticism from her, and that was all I was trying to give. I would be glad if people gave me comments on how I might improve my work, so I was just trying to do the same. Why is everyone so sensitive? If my opinion is not welcome, I will gladly take it somewhere else. I suppose that's what you get for trying to help.

Were you asked to critique? Does the picture say, critique this? Helping a friend is one thing, but read the caption for this picture. It was her first lake picture, taken with a point and click camera and she has obviously advanced since. Your critique is antiquated by those terms alone. It was an intentional black & white. To tell someone it should be in color to match your tastes is not constructive, nor is it useful. That's not sensitivity, that's logic.

I didn't say it should be in color. I said I preferred the color version. There's a difference. Maybe I didn't notice the age of the picture and the type of camera used is completely irrelevant. A good photographer can make good pictures with any kind of camera. And don't take that to mean I don't believe Sara is a good photographer because I don't feel that way. Stop reading things into what I say. All it causes is problems.

I like the B&W effect! But i couldn't decide between this one and the color version i like them both!
we've noticed this about dA too, but we've found out that if you upload from the beginning a smaller image (so you don't have to click on it for full view) the quality remains the same. dA does quite strange things to our photos when we upload them in the original size and then choose that they be shown at a smaller size

The image was pretty small compared to all my other pictures, so I was confused. I guess I could try to compress it, but my photoshop program (Paintshop Pro) doesn't compress them very well. The photo becomes grainy. It didn't do it to my Danbo picture either. I guess this is just one unlucky photo. I'm going to try what you say anyway to see if I can improve it, but I might have to just accept that it'll be a low quality photo. At least it doesn't do it to my new photos!

I'm glad you liked them. They were some of my first photos I've ever done. Thank you for helping me!
