Description Original XP: [link]
Thanks to ~tornado5 for submitting such great art
-
Included:
+ Ambient Visual Style
+ Ambient Explorer.exe

Explorer.exe is required for the user picture border and the logoff buttons.
-
Instructions for explorer.exe: *Note! Read ALL steps before you attempt.*

1: Download TakeControlb2.zip and extract.

2: Open the program and select 'Add'. Navigate to 'C:\WINDOWS\explorer.exe' and then select 'Take Control'. It will process the file.

3: Open up explorer (+E) and navigate to 'C:\WINDOWS\'. Find explorer.exe and rename it to 'explorer.exe.bak' (or something that represents a backup file. don't worry, your original explorer hasn't been altered) and copy+paste the 'explorer.exe' included in this .zip

4: Hit Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open up the Task Manager. Under the processes tab, right click 'explorer.exe' and click end process.

5: While still in Task Manager, click 'File' > 'New Task (Run...)' and in the box, type 'explorer'.

Any problems, post.

One of the best themes for XP and Vista.

Does this also works with Win7?

this creator will have to port it to 7 as the theme format is different.

Oh wow, this is amazing! My main PC is still using XP Pro because I'm old and hate change, luckily Ambient at least gives me something nice to look at when I'm using it. Ambient is like good food for the eyes for me, it's perfect - so restful, complete and harmonious. Unfortunately my laptop came with Vista and I can't be bothered down(UP!)-grading it to XP, or up(meh)-grading it to Windows 7 so I'm stuck with ... the default visual style Aero, my visual nemesis - I DESPISE IT!!! I'll leave it at that because I could write an essay about horrible I think it is - but I want to thank you for both the actual port and also the extra work you put in to make sure it all worked properly - your effort has given me enormous pleasure, er ... anyway, I keep looking at my laptop, I've hardly used it since I bought it, that might change now it's looking awesome ... Thanks again!

I had a similar problem because I needed a 32bit XP but with 4GB RAM. I found Windows 2003 Server Edition. Its just a better XP, fully compatible. 32bit with full 4GB RAM.

Hm, I'm only finding how to install it like how I did. Nothing about basic. What do you use? I'll give that a go.

Satukoro In reply to FL00TENKERP [2009-11-05 03:28:15 +0000 UTC]

I use the standard windows theme application.

Hm, this time I simply double clicked the style file and applied it and it's definitely improved, but the start button still seems to have an issue [link] I guess it's because I didn't do the explorer switching thing, but I always get that dll error, so I'm really not sure what to do. Could you tell me what you do specifically? Sorry for taking your time with all my questions, I really appreciate the help.

FL00TENKERP [2009-11-05 02:31:42 +0000 UTC]

How would I apply it normally? Sorry, I'm a noob at installing themes. I usually just use Tune Up utilities to use the styles.

Satukoro In reply to FL00TENKERP [2009-11-05 02:41:29 +0000 UTC]

In Tune Up, just select basic.

Satukoro In reply to FL00TENKERP [2009-11-05 03:11:35 +0000 UTC]

I'm not quite sure how, but I do know that it's possible. I don't use TuneUp Utilities myself, so I don't know. Although, trying this link may work: [link]

FL00TENKERP [2009-11-05 01:25:47 +0000 UTC]

Well, I think I might be screwing up on step 3: Open up explorer (+E) and navigate to 'C:\WINDOWS\'. I'm really not sure what to open, so I just open a folder and navigate there myself. Would that be fine? If not then what is it that I have to use to navigate there? And afterward, do I just use the style that came with it and it should work? I am currently using the style, but all that's not working is the start menu, as seen here [link]
Sorry for writing a storm :/

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Satukoro In reply to FL00TENKERP [2009-11-05 02:11:34 +0000 UTC]

Navigating there yourself would be fine because all + E does is open My Computer.

Also, you appear to be using the style in Aero mode. As this is a Basic style, I suggest you apply it normally for an ideal experience.

I'm trying to install the theme, but whenever windows tries to use the explorer.exe that came with the download, I get the error 'The ordinal 874 could not be located in the dynamic library link SHELL32.dll.' Any idea what I could have done wrong?

I run take control as administrator, take control of the original file, rename it so I know it's a backup, then end the process of explorer.exe, and then I type explorer in new task, but I get that error. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

I think this is the skin/theme they used for computers they used as props in TNT's series "Leverage": [link]

If you watch the show I'm sure you might've had speculations. But hey, your faymus if that was your skin on the show.

Anyway, great theme. Using the XP version now.

hey satukoro... i love the way you compacted the stuff! ... is it possible for you to make a visual style that originates from windows classic? because for my visual style... it would look better to have the classic style shutdown /logoff buttons

Are you able to apply any other visual styles? If so, then it is a problem with the theme in itself. I haven't received any other complaints, so, I'll get back to you.

Also, what exactly happens when you try to apply it?

Have you tried re-downloading it?
(if you've done the above step)
Go to C:\WINDOWS\Resources\Themes\ and you'll see the folder amb. Rename the folder to Ambient or something. Then, go into the folder you just renamed and rename amb.msstyles to the same thing that you renamed the folder to. So, if you renamed the folder to Ambient, then the visual should be called Ambient.msstyles. Yes, the name is case-sensitive.

If you re-download the file, all is well. It turned out to be a problem with Vista Style Builder. I've fixed an entry in a settings.ini file so that the program works correctly.
