Description was my inspiration for this pic! Check her out!
This is my first submission for the 100 theme challenge for the section of "Introduction"
This is the first time I've ever created/submitted this character, who was inspired by a combination of my love of researching Ancient Gods and =snapesnogger 's own Naga artwork of Red Venom.

The main basis of this character and the characters to follow was in Aztec Myths and Gods. King Coatl is my rendition of the god Quetzalcoatl, the Feathered (Plumed) Serpent. I also created him because of how =snapesnogger 's realm of Red Venom inspired me to take on a Naga storyline basing the characters on Aztec Gods and legends of those Gods. Naturally, I added my own twists to the old traditional stories and molded it into something of my own tragic tale, but the basis remains true to my research. For the snake bodies, I was trying to be culturally and regionally correct, since the Aztecs were based in Central/Latin/South America regions, so I based them off the greater snakes of the region, mostly constrictors. Anyhoo, here's the Bio I built up for King Coatl, and his Naga Tribe:

Name: King Coatl (means "Serpent King”)
Eyes: Emerald Green
Hair: Jet Black
Skin: Redish Tan,
Snake Body: Brown Anaconda
Occupation: King of the Nagual (Pronounced “Na-Hall”), Shaman King
Family: Coatl has a twin brother named Tez ([link] ) and a younger sister named Petatl([link] ).
Likes: Things he finds and deems to be “beautiful”
Dislikes: Defiance, Rebellion, Humans

Known throughout Naga cultures as the great Shaman King of the South Jungle Region, King Coatl and his tribe; the Nagual, lived deep in the jungles, isolated and shrouded mystery to the rest of the known Naga World and most human kind. Most of what was known came from old stories and legends passed down by generations of traveling Nagas who claimed to have passed through King Coatl’s domain. No humans have ever emerged from the southern Jungle alive to speak of their encounters.
Some of the stories of his origin claim that King Coatl is one of the last remaining ancient Naga Kings. Others speak of how he used his shaman magic to summon a torrential rain storm to save his people from a raging fire that humans had set to their jungle. One great story tells of how he summoned the spirit of the Heavenly Serpent to destroy a city of humans who threatened to sacrifice Naga children. Some say King Coatl himself was worshiped as a God by humans. Such tales are merely viewed as speculation and folklore by most common races.

Personality: He is very narcissistic and is obsessed over whether or not something is “beautiful”. He is strict and strong willed, and a strong warrior, despite his benign display. He lives atop the temple pyramid of the Heavenly Serpent, where he watches and guards the entire city from the great heights (this is also a ritual belief that the king is a guardian, much like the Goddess).
To his people, he is their most renowned Regent and hallowed follower of the Heavenly Serpent, to whom his sister is the high priestess to. Under his reign his people have driven out all human inhabitants, and conquered the neighboring beasts of the Southern Jungle. King Coatl ordered that his people capture some of the indigenous Giant Trapdoor Tarantulas and had them placed as special pets in the city square for special purposes.
He is an idol to his people, and revered as a just ruler with a swift hand to punish invaders and rebels. Should any human venture beyond the border of the north and south regions, a swift and deadly action is taken by the tribe nagas, some humans are taken alive back to their city, but none ever escape from the southern jungle. When humans are brought before him, he makes swift judgment and sends them to die. Human females are sent to be sacrificed to the Heavenly Serpent, and Human Males are put to public feeding in the City’s center square arena, where the giant tarantulas dwell in their burrows. Should a fellow Naga insight rebellion amongst his people, King Coatl is swift to “remove” such problems. What becomes of the rebels is unknown to the people. They just seem to disappear. Some think his methods can be a bit harsh, but he justifies his actions when he preaches that the results always keep the peace in the city and good Nagas can sleep safely, and the people support him.

Away from the eyes of his people, lays a darker persona, one of pure sadistic and cruel pleasure. As a young Naga destined for the throne, he grew spoiled and his mind became fascinated with devious ideas of killing and causing great physical and mental suffering. Mere thoughts of it began to manifest in a lustful pleasure as he grew. Coatl’s father was displeased with his heir’s vanity and did not get along at all with the crown prince. Once, in a fit of rage, Coatl’s father struck his across his beautiful face. After the initial shock, Coatl merely replied coldly;
“You will come to regret that touch, Father.”
One day, Coatl returned from a hunt alone and injured. He claimed he and his father were ambushed by humans and they had killed the King. Some of his people suspected that Coatl had killed his own father while out on the hunt, but none had been present to have witnessed the King’s demise. His people crowned their new king, and under his order, attacked the human village he claimed had killed his father. No human was left alive and the village was burned to the ground.
*Possibly more info to come!*

The Nagual (Pronounced: "Na-Hall")
The Nagual tribe themselves are a legendary Shaman race of Nagas, well known for their rites, spells, medicines and magics. They are a peaceful tribe and did not wage war on other Nagas. They live deep in the southern jungle, so obtaining a favor from them was a risky journey wrought with peril throughout the jungle. But because the jungle is rich with natural herbs and resources, the Nagual could find no better grounds to build their Shamanic city. Nagas who did manage to journey to the Nagual city were usually greeted with open hospitality and grace. They were friendly and willing to help their Naga brethren from any region, and would even grant them safe passage out of the jungle by guiding them to its edge. Any hostiles that would enter their region would usually suffer a painful death, or are taken prisoner by the Nagual.
Even though they are a race of shamans, they are also great warriors, utilizing their shamanic skills into their tactics. Magics and traps were used primarily, but they were quite proficient in using poison darts, archery, knives, swords and spears. Their best soldiers were their Tree Archers, who would lay in wait in the jungle canopy and launch a shower of arrows onto their enemies below.
*Also more info to come! ^_^*

The Nagual worship three main Gods;
•Malinal, The Heavenly Serpent, Godess of Snakes and Magics (Sorcery)

•Camax, The Flame Viper, God of War and Fire

-Celebrated with burning offerings of human males.
-Songs of war and the beating of drums are performed by the Priests.
-The king’s brother lives atop the temple pyramid.

•Cihua,The Ophidian Mother, Goddess of Creation
-Worshiped mainly by females as the protector of mothers, children, and fertility.

well dang. for years before I always loved this character and thought he was cool ((when I was edgy XD))
But now I still love him, but I just question why he lies to his people and hurt innocent humans, and lie on them too.
(yes i know i said this already XD. i have a tendency to repeat myself without knowing))

I would ask if we could roleplay because I have a tribe OC that I think would like to talk with your king. If he isn't scared of centipedes that is.
Maybe my prince can talk and maybe convince him to be less aggressive to humans. Maybe even show him that not all humans are bad. Worth a shot.

But I really do like this character and his background of an overEGO JAckAS, self-entitled, two face king.
Again you did an amazing job with the details and art style.

His lies are all part of his manipulation. HE wants to keep his people isolated and under his control, so by making creatures, like humans, out to be enemies that are not to be tolerated, he keeps them ignorant and loyal to him. Its a form of brainwashing. Similar to what you see in governments like North Korea.

I don't really role play anymore, but I will say, if King Coatl did meet your prince, and he felt your character was a threat to undermine his veil of deception and cause the fall of his throne, Coatl may turn his people against him too.

dang. Thanks for also giving info on how he works. I don't think my prince will like your king.
But he will try to understand him and maybe befriend him.

And awww that sucks. I was hoping you roleplay still, but that's fine. I'm not going to pressure you.

Heh, no, this is totally unrelated to the anime. I never even heard of the series when I made this character.

My BF introduced me to the Shaman King anime later. It was a cute show.

Let him squeeze me all he wants, I am an immortal. One night, I might just send a energy beam through the bars and break out of prison. What do you think?

The calm before the storm. If you want, I would like you to draw a picture of me being crushed by this guy. I need a reason to bust his chops. I am a young angel boy, very handsome and the perfect target for him.

Well...if you're a pretty boy who won't die after he tortures you, then he may lock you up as his personal "Rage Toy" where he'll keep you just to torment you for his own amusment.

He's pretty wicked.

Having him squeeze me is not a problem, I kind of like the feeling of snake scales.

wow your nagas are really fascinating!
I didn't know what a naga is before^^
The Aztecs are a fascinating folk! and everything fits in yur picture: a south american culture like the aztecs and he got the body of a south american snake...^^ impressive
and this long thoughts about your characters! amaizing! with such depth!
I really begin to love your little fantasy world XD

you should make a whole graphic novel about it^^

this is a very interesting character. every thought you spent in it. very scary but fascinating!
even this horrific snake and mouse game story.
it's so fascinating i nearly want to be part of it XD
but i hope i'll never have any conflict with that guy XD "hey there is nothing wrong about you i like you okay so why can't i just go? " XDDD

fantasy really is your area! excellent^^

Wow, this is the biggest comment I've ever recieved! Thank you very much! ^_^
Yeah, I tend to get a bit carried away when a new idea comes to me. My brain kinda explodes.
I've always had a fascination with ancient civilizations and the Aztecs were one of the few that held snakes in high regard and worship.
I would make a graphic novel...perhaps one day. I've just got too much going on IRL.

Again, thanks for the comment!

That was the longest artist comment I have ever read. I like the texture you used on the tail.
I think that if you added a few more highlights and shadows it would make the drawing pop out more. but good job.

SaturnGrl In reply to FifteenMinutes [2006-09-16 03:47:32 +0000 UTC]

Ah, cool! Its quite an interesting field of study. I liked the Aztecs more because of their civilization's mysterious disappearence. But their Gods and myths are similar to the Mayans. Kinda like how the Greek and Roman Gods were shared.

FifteenMinutes In reply to SaturnGrl [2006-09-16 03:48:38 +0000 UTC]

well, it's normal because both civilizations had contact

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SaturnGrl In reply to FifteenMinutes [2006-09-16 03:50:52 +0000 UTC]

True. Kinda wonder what caused the Aztecs to disappear though. Heh, maybe we'll find out what happened to them when we find Atlantis.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

FifteenMinutes In reply to SaturnGrl [2006-09-16 03:54:02 +0000 UTC]

I think their civilization disappeared because the Spanish arrived in America, and like every conquest, they destroyed many things...
I'm glad to hear that you also believe in Atlantis, I have read some things about them too

btw, I added you to my friend list, I hope you will do the same hehe

SaturnGrl In reply to FifteenMinutes [2006-09-16 04:04:11 +0000 UTC]

Of course! Ancient civilizations have always captured my interest. Ever wonder why there is a connection with the pyramids across the world? I believe in a theory that Atlantis was at the heart of it all.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

FifteenMinutes In reply to SaturnGrl [2006-09-16 04:18:17 +0000 UTC]

yes, I believe that too, and we can look at the facts too, both egyptian and aztec cultures were really advanced for their time and thei gods were almost the same, with different names! Maybe the 2 civilizations were founded by the survivors of Atlantis...

SaturnGrl In reply to FifteenMinutes [2006-09-16 21:35:02 +0000 UTC]

There's a good posibillity. But perhaps one day we will discover the truth behind the great civilizations of the past. But for now, we can enjoy the myth and lore that inspires us. ^_^
