I normally wait till the comic is fully done to post these but, nah, I have 2/4 pages done so I might as well post something of it now. Since I don't really mind anyway.
But I digress
~~
Here we meet a brand new addition to the SAWTOB universe!
But...you've seen a bit of her before anyway, without even realizing it!
She's been a bit of a cameo in a few comics and I doubt anyone really took notice
I'll get it straight out of the way since she says it in the next page anyway that she's Mikela the Fruit Bat. A sassy bat but with a good heart.
I know some will think "You got the idea from Sonic's Rogue the bat didn't you....? You're just ripping her off..."
firstly in a way yeah the inspiration of her came from there and from Adorabat from Mao Mao with the sass lol
and two she has no desires of worlds gems lol. she's no treasure hunter. She just likes to live freely. You'll learn more about her anyway as time goes on.
But where has this sassy bat been before? And or even referenced before?
well a few instances:
Her first appearance is in the comic "P-orn" (because of course it is, but ironically that's where a lot of people are first Cameoed without realizing)
www.deviantart.com/savageraten…
Her title goes by: "FruityTooty69" (cause you know I had to go there lol) where she and others talk about Willy and what he thinks Porn actually means while being adorable about it.
During this time, I had an IDEA for her, but I didn't have her design yet.
But during this time, I was able to do at least, make some of her attributes which in this one, you'll notice she's both flirtatious but also kind hearted but can have a bit of sass to herself.
Idk man, something about bats being sassy is always funny lol.
The second cameo she makes is ironically in a halloween challenge:
SAWTOB: Halloween Challenge #19UnknownEntity [2020] Fun fact is that by the time I made that picture, I have already written out this very comic, it just took a few years because I didn't know how to feel about really revealing any character's yet. well newer ones since the series was still new.
Well it technically is still new but I figured if I waited that long, eventually they may get tiresome to some people since yeah I can make all the comics I want, but it's nice to introduce someone new at this point.
So the picture there, is a reference to this very comic that took 3 years for me to finally make and introduce her as a character. This was no one stand off picture of a random bat.
Again however, during this time, I didn't know much of what I would do with her design wise, which is why she's shadowed out. And her eyes if you notice were more orange.

third reference is again in the halloween challenge of 2020
SAWTOB: Halloween Challenge #22 Bats [2020]Only because well, she's a bat lol. Made sense lol. But again because I didn't have her design 100% thought out, she was only a shadow for people to maybe take seriously during that time.

But that's not all, there's one last comic which I thought I posted here but i guess for mature sake I didn't; there's a comic named "Down The Mill" a mini comic that shows the day in the life of Milly
And in one of the panels, there's her and her brother having lunch and in the picture of above them shows Mikela of the picture "Bats" from the halloween challenge
Showing/indicating that the two know of each other.
Which can be found here:

So this bat certainly has had references of her own existence, it's just a shame that this series isn't popular enough to get people to really notice or ask the questions.
which is odd cause I thought people liked commenting. Then again I noticed over the years DA has gotten more and more....quiet half the time unless their fanbases are already established.
So that's a shame....ah well, can't ask for everything and if I kept waiting I didn't want it to become stale and dull of lacking of more characters.
~~~
Regardless of that, I will also add, that this was made in Clip Studio
reason I bring that up is because, well because I bought the Paint Ex Pro, I got the 2.0 update for free which they gave me the code for (which they better since I paid 219$ for it...)
And I was trying new techniques that this new update had.
In particular, there's a new one called "Automatic Shader" that kind of?? Shades?? For you?? In a way??
I'd say it's more best for backgrounds then characters. But i wanted to keep consistency.
And I was curious of how it works.
Granted, it is nice to have a shader, an automatic shader mind you when really you have so many panels to go through, you have a deadline perhaps and if you're like me it's a mini comic it doesn't matter as much as a literal important longer comic.
Because thing is, as I expected, it's not 100% on what it's shading. Just think of it like a filter if anything. Because it does have night, evening, day etc. which is again great for the setting/mood of a picture that you just want to get it done and over with because with today's economy you have to work fast on your feet half the time.
But I'd only recommend it for fast pictures, or mini comics. non detailed or rather more simplistic pieces and such.
Nothing for real serious projects since the shading in each frame if let's say you were using it for an animation, it would be terribly off etc.
this is more as I expected, faster approach. Again a mini comic mini picture with little detail to bring it out some more with quick shading.
Because the thing is, no one cares, it's a mini comic showing off characters and scenarios
now if it was a more serious project, I'd skip right over it.
And I'd also choose the shell shader over the soft since the soft doesn't look that great.
I'd say they have kinks to work out of it to make it "perfect" but it's almost like an AI to tell you where it thinks it should go.
It's not at all the worst again if you have a mini comic or you're just that sucky at shading in general and you just want something decent.
this is what I'd say this is for
people who like to play around with shaders and see what suits best.
If you already know how to shade like I do, then it's just a quicker way to push out mini comics and save effort for better bigger projects.
Problem with automatic anything, it's never going to get anything 100% right.
Again, it's...a good alternative if you don't want to spend hours shading for a 3-4 page mini comic and you just want to get it done and make it look decent.
because again it's not bad, but if you keep looking at it you can tell it's just automatic/rushed by that.
Beside;
I still had to add in the light from the lamp and brighten up their eyes anyway because thing is, it's a shader, but it doesn't lighten anything really like highlights or anything
so if I wanted to add highlights to their hair, or add shadows BENEATH the character or add light to a lamp or light source "I" Have to do that, because it's just shadowing the area.
and sadly there is a limit. That you have to do the background separately and then the characters; making you have to rename each layer because you will get confused
unlike for some reason, the background I was able to do all in one, but the characters I had to do for each panel because it would say "too many colors detected"
So you'd literally have to name each one like i did like "Character Shader Pn1 01" because it would go by 3's by "Shade tone 1/2/3" etc for each layer and it goes up to 4 at times.
So if you don't name them, you WILL get confused.
Again I would NEVER recommend this for better projects.
A one off quick picture or a mini comic just to push something out to the public, fine.
But a real passion project that you want to put effort into? Yeah no.
Or rather you're learning shadowing and such and you suck at it, and it's your visual guide.
the whole comic will look like this etc, and I'll try to make it look good as best as I can cause again, I realize it's practically an AI doing the work for you, and you're selecting color or how much etc. It's no different from adobe asking it to do lighting effects.
But again, I don't mind mini comics since I can push those faster
real hard working projects? This can get lost lol. It'll never fully function that way.
So I wanted to at least try it out with a few other things that it has in store.
There are a few other unique features I kind of was curious about like the spin effect for fast blurred and you have control over which way it goes so that can come in handy for action movements.
Again don't worry this isn't my prime way of making comics, not longer comics that is, like how i put "I'll Do anything for you" comic on hiatus until this coming winter. It will NOT have the automatic shader.
Only for those with 4-5 pages will get this treatment because those that are like that, aren't important and the more I can push out since I'm one person, the more you get out of it.
I should be able to finish the last two pages today.
So there's also that so you'll have the full comic.
~
hope you enjoy
