Description A new project (as if I didn't have enough already, lol), I have plans to construct a weight-driven mechanical clock. These preliminary gear designs are to find out which patterns are both mechanically sound and aesthetically pleasing. Ranging in size from about 1 inch to 5 inches in diameter, they are laser-cut from 1/4 inch poplar. The final parts will likely be cut from baltic birch plywood to reduce warpage and weakness along the grain. Regardless of the final outcome, I'm sure these will make great drink coasters. (or spare parts for my steampunk temporal-transporter)

Thank you These were cut on my Epilog 45 watt laser. Max table size is 12" x 24", so I guess the largest single-piece diameter I could cut would be close to 12" (at a max thickness of about 1/4"). I can cut larger pieces on my CNC router... up to around 48" diameter (at up to 1" thick). Thicker gears could be made by cutting and stacking layers. Larger diameters could also be made by combining several sections.Β  Would be happy to give you a quote if you let me know what sizes/quantities you need

Tom, thanks for the speedy reply. Sections would be the answer for sure. I'm working on the plans for a very large wooden clock with the largest gear being about 4 ft in diameter. I'll give you specs soon so you can give me an idea of cost. Thanks and keep up the awesome work.Β

i really like the pattern, how did you do it, where did you get it ? is it possible to download vector to lasercut it myself ?

Please forgive me. I can't remember if I sent you a response to your question. I created all of the designs myself and, yes, vector files are available. Send me a note if you are still interested...

I stumbled on your gears while searching for a canvas print with a clock theme. Please print this beautiful photo on canvas around 3 ft tall and sell. I want something like this over my fireplace!

Thank you, Char, for the compliment. I was trying for a sort of "Victorian" look on these gears. Some of the others had a more geometric pattern, but I liked these the best.

Thanks for the compliment (and the fave) Some of the color is a direct result of the laser burning through or into the wood; some of the other tones were from a coat of spar varnish applied to the wood prior to cutting.

did you use a milling machine?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

savageworlds In reply to ishouldplayzelda [2010-01-23 05:27:42 +0000 UTC]

Actually, I first drew the designs for each gear on a computer with a program called AutoCad. Then I used that electronic design file to cut each gear with my CO2 laser. If you are interested in seeing a laser in action, there are videos here: [link] on the website of the company where I bought my laser.

p.s.- I do also own and operate a cnc router (very similar to a milling machine).

Thanks for the enthusiastic compliments! For clock plans and/or kits, try the following:

[link] Jeff Schierenbeck (where I got my first set of plans) Instructions were easy to understand and follow.

[link] I'm unsure of the prices or level of difficulty but the designs look cool.

[link] Clayton Boyer's designs are nothing short of amazing, and offer a wide range of projects from 'entry-level' to 'master clocksmith'

Best wishes!

Yes, I actually added an extra (non-functional) gear to maintain symmetry after I collapsed the overall design from its linear layout. Glad you enjoyed it.

Actually I favorited this because I had similar ideas except not for a clock. I love the gears and the way they look. Still curious on how they function. I plan on hand cutting a few gears out of brass. I am not allowed to use the machinery at work for my personal projects

Best of luck with your project. Brass can be a challenge with handtools, but certainly not impossible. If you are looking for actual gear patterns, there are fairly inexpensive patterns available online.

Thanks! It was actually part of a series of experiments to make an actual weight-driven, all-wood clock. I have temporarily moved my energies to doing the first one in clear plexiglas. All the parts are now cut; I just need to mount them on their respective axles. [link] [link]
The next one will be wood.

ever consider using brass?

savageworlds In reply to Ohno-moment [2009-04-04 03:22:07 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for both the compliment and fave! These gears (and the acrylic ones, as well) were cut with a low wattage CO2 laser. Great for wood and plastic, but metals... not so much. I do have access to a 3-axis router, but the accuracy is not equal to, say, a precision milling machine. If I do go with brass in the future, I think I'd want to make sure my cuts were as perfect as possible. It will probably happen, but I'm not sure exactly when.
