Nala has blonde fur and blue/green eyes, what other race has those features? If you see Savu's humanized Scar, Sarabi, Kosa, and Azra, they're all a bit darker in skin. They're lions not humans. What they would look like as a human isn't pre-determined. People draw them as wolves, dogs, I've seen TLK characters drawn as horses! None of those things are African.

Cinnamon-Stix In reply to T-Maybel [2013-05-02 18:56:53 +0000 UTC]

Why? Because it's in Africa? That's racist. You know that a lot of Africa has Caucasians, right? The British colonized it years and years ago. There was even segregation at one point.

That's not even going off fur colour. That's just common sense. Not all the lions humanized would be the same colour. Some would probably even be Egyptian looking, based on the caramel colour of the fur.

Oh of course, a story set in southern to central Africa is obviously going to have white royals, how silly to think otherwise! It's not enough that black characters don't get the privillege of exiting in fairy tale worlds like the white princesses do, now even when they're in Africa it's "racist" to say that they're supposed to be a certain race(that isn't white). And how cute, the person who is basically denying the characters are coded black -something not even Disney does- is crying racsim?

Her fur is blonde and she has blue/green eyes, how would she not be white as a human, what other race has those features? And why "ew"?

She's AFRICAN. And ew because I'm sick of all these white draws of black characters.

TomiPhantom In reply to T-Maybel [2012-10-26 02:06:04 +0000 UTC]

She isn't black. She's a lion. If you wanna get technical they have a pink-ish skin, similar to a white person.

I wonder why the Disney Musical uses an all-black cast? I wonder why young Nala was voiced by a black girl? Could it be that you're racist?

People can show nala's as any race they want, even asianΒ Β  Disney didn't say she is white or black or any human race. Why? Because nala's is an ANIMAL.

She's a lion in AFRICA, she should be AFRICAN as a human.

FighteroftheForest In reply to T-Maybel [2012-10-31 08:13:40 +0000 UTC]

Well Nala as a character in the movie is pale. An plus savu already said in one of his journals that the human versions are based on the characters, so for some characters it is hard to make it look like an African. (Like nala)

mewhaku [2012-09-25 22:57:59 +0000 UTC]

All I can say is that its your interpretation, and people should relax. You're taking a different interpretation from the story- imagining purely as humans, taking reference to the lions purely from facial structures and general color schemes. If people think that's racist... it's sorta looking for a problem that isn't there. I believe in one of the comments you mentioned more of a medieval time period you're thinking for these as? I get the reference, similar to Hamlet, which Lion King takes many references from. And well, frankly, Hamlet was not filled with African Americans. If you were doing a literal humanization and taking into account Africa and more so the lions physical background that'd be a whole other argument. But yeah. Neat stuff.

Everyone please, get over the fact that she's white. For God's sake, it's the artist's impression of nala as human, not yours. And in the movie Nala is a lighter coloured lion anyway, so white fits her. GET OVER IT AND STOP BITCHING ALREADY.

Savu you have done a wonderful job humanising these characters. You don't have to justify your choices in any way either, and everyone should respect your choice as the artist.

karby In reply to xxCher [2012-09-12 04:53:40 +0000 UTC]

The movie is set in Africa, based on an African tale, heavily imbued with African themes, and yet they're all white. Great logic you got there. After all, you can never have too many white people, can you? If it's not about white people, then make it about white people, right? It always has to be about white people, even when it has nothing to do with white people.

ChristinYou In reply to karby [2012-12-26 00:24:57 +0000 UTC]

What the fuck does this have ANYTHING to do with my comment? I'm not saying anything racist, you instantly assumed I did, and took it the wrong way. it is THE ARTIST'S FUCKING CHOICE. Not yours.
Don't like it? FUCK OFF

ChocolateChipPony In reply to karby [2012-09-27 19:28:44 +0000 UTC]

Oh shut up! To be honeest. I too would see Nala as being white, given her voice, & her light color as a lioness! I like this pic it's a great job at humanizing Nala. I usually don't care for humanized animal chars, but, they are growing on me. I opened the pic, without reading the title, & said *gasp* It's NALA! Just by looking at the face, & her color. If she'd been black, I'd've thought who's this? *reads the title* Oh it's Nala, it doesn't look like her, the color's all wrong. So yeah white, or light skinned suits her. End of story!

As you can see, they are not white, so sorry to disappoint. :/

And everyone is forced to make it exactly like Disney's version. NOT.
Those are painted humans. Nothing more, nothing less. Get over it.

πŸ‘: 2 ⏩: 1

karby In reply to KattFloka [2012-10-11 07:41:39 +0000 UTC]

Maybe you should get over the fact that they are not white. It is an African story told by African people. I am pretty sure that when African people tell African stories they are telling stories about Africans. Not white people. Even Disney knows it's not a story about white people, just look at that photo. I'm sorry if it sounds mean or offensive but that doesn't mean it isn't true.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

KattFloka In reply to karby [2012-10-12 12:09:24 +0000 UTC]

Sorry to burst your bubble, but where of earth is TLK "told by African people"? It's a story told by NO ONE since it's a movie wihtout a Voice-over. If you still want to believe that it was told by anyone, it would bw the team that produced it, consisting mostly of white poeple.

If I wanted to, I could make my version of the lions humanized blue, or green or rainbow-coloured if I felt like. What YOU think about that doesn't mean ANYTHING. It's the artist interpretion that matters, and the can do it JUST THE WAY they want, without you or anyone acting like it's wrong.

Your lack of imagination disturbs me.

"Sorry to burst your bubble, but where of earth is TLK "told by African people"?"
In Africa, of course.

KattFloka In reply to karby [2012-10-12 13:24:12 +0000 UTC]

So you're saying, that there's a bunch on African people in Africa, who were sittitng there, telling the story about a lion kingdom?
Get real. It's not a folklore if you think that. It's a story made up by a bunch of white people.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

karby In reply to KattFloka [2012-10-13 06:16:47 +0000 UTC]

I know the story. The real story, the one modified by Disney. Deny if you wish, but its origin is African, east African, to be exact...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

KattFloka In reply to karby [2012-10-13 09:39:03 +0000 UTC]

And how about HAMLET, which is the story it follows a bit too much? Are you saying Hamlet is African too? Get real, and get away from here since you do nothing but complain because your imagination doesn't reach further than your nose. Don't you ever think for yourself, or do you let everone else do all the thinking for you?

πŸ‘: 1 ⏩: 1

karby In reply to KattFloka [2012-10-13 12:40:57 +0000 UTC]

Hamlet is of European origin. TLK tale and Hamlet may have some story element similarities, but they are of different origins and are not the same.
