Personality:
- Adaptive / Adventurous / Principled / Social / Athletic / Independent
Having moved around her entire life, Chae is used to having to adapt to new environments and make the best out of a foreign situation. She developed a social personality in order to survive her teenage years and to fit in with her peers. Chae is that friend that will force her group to go on adventures that involve lots of obstacles and athletic ability.
She has a strong sense of morality for what is wrong and right. Individuals that stray from her opinions of morality, such as bullies or any other mean-spirited individual, will receive a nasty look and a severe lecture.
Though she thrives in groups of people, she also enjoys her alone time. As she raised a few of her siblings, due to her parents' busy jobs, Chae is able to take care of herself without having to always rely on others.
- Sarcastic / Pedantic / Cautious / Superficial / Competitive / Busy-body
Chae is from a fairly strict family where rules are important. Therefore, she is much more reserved in front of them and uses her friends and social situations as an outlet to joke around and release her pent-up sarcasm.
Like most teenagers, she desires to fit in and does so by being social with everyone. As a result of moving around a lot, most of Chae’s relationships are superficial and so are her opinions of them. She, in turn, is cautious about opening up and forming close bonds with others.
Being one of the youngest in her family, she has been overshadowed by her older siblings, which has caused her to become competitive and worry about the smallest details in order to stand out and become recognized by her parents. This is applied to all other situations in her life, ranging from basketball games to academic grades.
History:
Hanif Sabah met Guiying Yi at a college party in England while she was attending an internship for the summer. Both kicked it off immediately and after few years decided to get married. Many years along the road, Chae was born as the fourth child in Lima, Peru and spent her first years of life there. Her father is the ambassador to Saudi Arabia resulting in the family having to move around every few years.
Her early childhood was mainly spent moving around South America. She had spent her time in Venezuela, Argentina, and Ecuador and picked up Spanish along the way. Chae had come to feel as though she was part of the Latino community and the bonds she made with her friends are ones she continues to take with her until this day. As most young children, Chae was very curious about her surroundings and was often found reading an encyclopedia in every opportunity she could find. This was not limited to late-night reads under her bedsheets with a flashlight, or sitting for hours on the toilet and forgetting her initial purpose of even being there. Coupled with her thirst for knowledge, Chae would drag her friends into adventures that usually ended up in bruises and stern lectures from her parents. Responsibility became a bigger part of her personality when her twin younger siblings were born, as she began helping more around the house.
This blissful period of her life took a drastic turn when she became 10 and her family moved to Singapore. Chae experienced a huge culture shock and initially had a very difficult time fitting in with her peers. She had recently gotten a significant growth spurt causing her to tower over her classmates and making her feel as even more of an outsider. Her parents began to worry and persuaded one of her older brothers to convince Chae to join extracurricular activities. Initially, Chae was skeptic and reluctantly joined the basketball team. The first few practices she spent in the corner avoiding any contact with her teammates. Once she started to get the hang of the rules and drills, the team coach was surprised to discover that Chae had a natural talent for basketball. He had noticed Chae’s distant composition and decided to make her co-captain of the team in order to get her to open up. The plan worked, and over time Chae developed her social skills, fell in love with the sport, and rose on the social pyramid in her school.
During her lifetime, her maternal grandmother made frequent visits to whatever country they were currently residing in. She would fill Chae’s ears with Chinese myths and superstitions, instigating her fascination with them. Her grandmother had hinted at ancient magic being in their ancestry, but Chae quickly dismissed the claims believing that science had a stronger argument.
The latest relocation, at 14, was to South Africa. By this move, she had perfected the strategy of smoothly integrating into any foreign situation and she quickly formed a group of friends and joined the basketball team. Her life seemed to finally go on track as she slowly emerged from her awkward middle school years.
Chae had been on a few Safari’s in her lifetime, but she couldn’t have anticipated even in her wildest fantasies what would happen on her latest family trip. They had stopped to view some giraffes using binoculars on top of a land cruiser. Suddenly, out of seemingly nowhere, a baboon approached the vehicle and sat right next to Chae. Delighted, her family began taking pictures of this interaction. The aforementioned event turned sour in a heartbeat; a hoard of baboons began to run towards Chae. In retrospect, this was not the smartest move on Chae’s part, but she jumped out of the car and started running down the dirt road. As in any classic chase scene, she tripped. Time seemed to slow down as her family’s screams echoed in the background and the faces of a dozen of baboons neared. Chae’s instinctual reaction caused her to yell “STOP!” and a cloud of dirt and a strong gust of wind surrounded her and swept some of the baboons off their feet. Within seconds the dust cloud settled and the baboons stared silently at her and slowly retreated back into the long, dry grass.
Receiving the email from Saya set Chae’s jaw to drop to the floor. She was in disbelief at first and immediately deleted the email, afraid it was infected with some sort of virus. Her school work on her computer was more important than some “you won a lucky scholarship to a magical school” email any day. Doing so did not decrease the strange surges of wind, small movements of rocks, or the occasional vulture that would follow her. Before she knew it, the girl from the email was at her front door and she was swept off to Brooklyn House without any time to argue.
Extras:
- Has various moles on her body and untamable hair.
- Wears contacts when in public, but glasses when she is alone; she is basically blind.
- Wears a jade necklace she received from her grandmother for luck. Though she is not very religious, her grandmother’s superstitious belief is somehow unconsciously ingrained into her actions.

- Has a collection of many small artifacts from all the countries she’s lived in and visited.
- Has been the basketball captain since her first year in middle school.
- Can fluently speak Spanish, Arabic, English, and Mandarin. She is a beginner in Tamil and Afrikaans.
