Description "This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success." Joshua 1:8

I'm sure we've all heard that we should "meditate" on the Bible. In all honesty, I never understood what "meditating" on a scripture actually meant, until one of my pastors explained it to me by using a technique called SOAP. I made the above deviation to explain how it works:

You start off by reading the Bible until you find a scripture that really talks to you. You then write down the scripture under the title Scripture (Step 1).

You then observe the scripture: What is it saying? What does it mean? What implication does it have towards you? You then write all of this down under the heading Observation (Step 2).

Now, you think of ways you can apply what the scripture is telling you: How can you act on what you've learnt from this scripture? What must you do practically? You write this down under the heading Application (Step 3).

After you've figured out what the scripture is saying, and how you can act on it, you pray about it. Ask God to help you do what He has just told you to do through this scripture. You can write down this prayer under the heading Prayer (Step 4).

And there you have it - this is a practical way of MEDITATING on scripture. Keep going back to this scripture until you have succeeded on doing what the scripture tells you to do on a daily basis.

For those who keep a prayer journal: You can add your SOAP entries to your prayer journal every day. Remember to add the date to every SOAP entry as well For those who would like to learn how to keep a prayer journal, please read the tutorial here [link]

Meditating on scripture is advice God gave us to do so that you may prosper and have good success (Josh 1:8). I'm sure this is something we all want, so please make it part of your daily routine to meditate on scripture. There are different ways to "meditate on scripture", I have merely given you one practical way to do so. If you have any questions about this, please leave a comment or send me a note.

Edit: I'm afraid I used a journal background by mistake for my previous version of this deviation's background. I have changed the background to something else - It looks nice too so I hope you guys don't mind

Really nice!  This reminds me a lot of a technique called Inductive Bible study that Intervarisity Christian Fellowship teaches.  The steps there are O. I. A. or "Observe, Interpret, Apply."  I have found this method to bring unimaginable depth to my scripture study.  Thank you for sharing your version!
