An obscure one I've always liked. For me and the other person who still remembers this movie, this is Angel from Canadian animation studio Nelvana's feature film Rock & Rule from 1983. Although there are different versions of the movie, the one I'm familiar with has the backstory of a nuclear war erupting between the US and Soviet Union that decimates mankind. In it's place, a new kind of humanoid evolves from the surviving animals such as rodents and cats and the like. Carrying on with a new advanced post-apocalyptic society.In this world, aging hasbeen rocker, Mok, has discovered a key to unleash a great evil from another dimension. Believing that bringing armageddon upon a populace that increasingly rejects him will be the ultimate final act of relevance. Using a ring created by an AI, he uses it to find the one component he needs to unleash his twisted plan... a unique singing voice. After discovering a struggling band in a nightclub performing to a nearly empty house, he finds the voice he needs after scouring the world... that, of an Angel.
The movie has an impressive soundtrack, Cheap Trick, Earth Wind & Fire, Lou Reed, Iggy Pop, Debbie Harry. Saw it as a kid because it always seemed to be in rotation on cable, where it got a cult following. I always found these ambitious but undiscovered animated flicks fascinating.

Apparently a number of editors on YouTube used clips from this movie for unofficial music videos for synthwave songs! However unfortunately the movie didn’t go too far because of how the master tapes were destroyed in a studio fire not long after the movie was released.

I discovered Rock & Rule thanks to this deviation and the only thing I can say is... *sigh* creators in the Eighties were a much bolder lot. I've seen nothing in today's pop culture, which seems to be largely soaked with Eighties' nostalgia, that comes even close to these levels of fun madness.

Love this film! I picked up the Anniversary Edition a while back. This is one of the animated films that helped form my deep love of the medium beyond simply so called "kid stuff".

My best friend and I would often watch a really bad copy of the Canadian version recorded off a station in B.C. We would get home from school, pop it in the Betamax player and just be amazed at the animation and music.

Man, this movie keeps coming up all the time.
I remember first seeing the DVD at one of those Media stores in the mall, and I thought it was interesting. the cover was, anyhow. it stuck with me. Wasn't until I saw it again a few years later, I did some research, and I decided, after one search on Wikipedia, and Viewing on Youtube later, I wanted to do a Video Review on it.
I've been a bit busy to get around to doing the review proper, but Retro-Rerun, the guys who currently hold the rights to it, uploaded the entire thing on their channel!

Very cool. Retro reviews are always interesting to see how something holds up in the current generation. It's definitely a product of its era, but it's still pretty watchable by today's standards. From what I understand, the US got a more sanitized version that waters down the language. I'd like to see the first run Canadian release if it's out there.

Yeah, in the sterilized version, the random henchman that buys it survives, The Hellbeast at the end doesn't devour people in the audience by the handful like Cracker-Jacks.
In Germany, it was called 'Ring of Power.'
Aside from that, I think that's all the trading card stats I remember from my research on the Movie!

Another tidbit I read is that Rock and Rule is frequently miscredited as a Bakshi film, so much so, that bootleg copies Credit him as the director!

Kind of odd seeing four toes/fingers on otherwise-realistic feet/hands, but I'm guessing it was like that in the movie itself. If so, fair enough.
