From left to right:
Mario, the hero of the story, working to use the Master Gems to stop Scarborous and the Eternal Heart, and save Blumiere as well
Timpani, who has been reverted back into a Pixl after an incident with Scarborous, and the Tattle of the adventure. Longs to be with Blumiere again
Kirby, Mario's best friend and battle ally, he always fights with Mario
Dimentio, an unpredictable person to be a Partner- has learned the error of his ways and is now a hero
Leechtail, a dragon who likes to eat butterflies, and the boss of this chapter

Follwing up from the Prolouge, the team uses the Return Pipe to go to Flipside. Upon arrival Merlon greets the party.
Merlon: Oh,thank goodness, it's Mario! The Man in Red is here to save us once again from the darkness! And it looks like you brought Timpani and this pink guy with you?
Kirby: My name is Kirby. And yes, that's Timpani over there. Scarborous kidnapped Blumiere after infesting Peach's Castle and reverting Tippi back into a Pixl.
Merlon: Dear lord! That is horrible! Almost as horrible as what Scarborous did a few hours ago!
Mario: What did he do?
Merlon: He summoned the Chaos Heart, took the Pure Hearts from their pillairs and fused them into the Purity Heart, and then fused the two Hearts into the eviliest thing since Wilfre- The Eternal Heart!
Kirby: I read about that thing! It was used by Chaos in an attempt to destroy everything on the plane of Existence! We need to stop him before he uses it to end everything!
Merlon: And the only way to do that....is to use the Master Gems: the very things that-in legend-helped create the Pure Hearts! However, 7 of them have fallen into the hands of Scarborous' minions. You should use one you've got-I noticed it i you pocket-at the Hall of Mirrors and it should unlock a door to Pokey Dunes, where you should find the purple Master Gem. However, I think that you'll have to face a minion to obtain it. Good luck!
(You gain contol of Mario and his party, and explore Flipside, which has changed greatly. For one thing, there is a big memorial statue of Blumiere and Timpani in the center of the main plaza, and inside it is the new Hall of Mirrors. When you find the secret door, a familiar figure is seen blocking the way.)
Mario: Dimentio!
Dimentio: Wha~* Oh, if it isn't the Man in Red himself!
Kirby: Don't play smart-aleck with us, jester. If it's a fight you're looking for, you just got one.
Kirby jumps towards Dimentio, initiating a mini boss battle. Within it, Timpani reminds you of the battle basics.

"That's Dimentio, a jester prince that caused us a lot of trouble in the past. (stat remark goes here) Why do I get the feeling he's holding back?"

After the battle, Dimentio lands on the floor, showing glee.
Dimentio: Ah ha ha ha, just as I expected, like a hunter stalking a silent deer! You jumped ahead of yourselves before I could explain why I am here! You see, I realized that I had done a mistake, like a computer making a simple error! I decided to become a good guy!
Kirby: -sigh- I guess it makes sense.
Mario: SO...why were you blocking our way?
Dimentio: Why else? To join you on your adventure, of course! I think my magic skills could come in handy to you heroes, and I wanted to help as soon as I heard about your quest. Scarborous, it's payback time! Time for me to get vengance for you hypnotizing me into trying to destroy all worlds!

Dimentio joined your party!
Element: Celestial (weak vs. Dark, strong against Light)
Field: Can use magic spells to reveal invisible objects.
Starting attack: Dimensional Shuriken

After that the team heads into the Hall of Mirrors and places the Master Gem under the blue-colored mirror. The mirror then shakes and becomes a dimensional door to the first area. Mario and co head into it, arriving in a desert.
Mario: So this is Pokey Dunes. Time to get searching.
(The player gains control again, and proceeds to the right, fighting Dark Goombas, Pokeys and Spikes along the way. Before long the heroes wander into a town called Koopa Village.)
Mario: Koopa Village? Odd name.
Mayor Kips: What're yeh callin odd, youngster? This place is packed with Koopas! Anyways, Merlon told meh that you young peeps were coming in search of a Master Gem. And don't worry, he knows about Dimentio joining already.
Dimentio: So where can we find it?
Mayor Kips: Ye should look in teh Yoshi Ruins outside tis town, chap! But be warned, ere be tis giant dragon workin for Scarborous that has the Mas gem in his feeble grasp!
(You control Mario and co, and set out to the ruins, fighting Life Demon Spawns and Dark Dimenti en route to the ruins. Once you arrive inside, you try to find your way to the clearing, and you fight Temple Demons, Zippy Bats, and Weeping Nimbi along the way. You make it to the clearing and a massive roar is heard.)
Timpani: O-oh no.....
Leechtail flies down from above, initiating the boss battle.

"That's Leechtail, the dragon bruiser of Scarborous' forces. (Stat remark goes here) It has the Master Gem in it's stomach, and-wait, why is it looking at me and licking it's lips? AHH! IT WANTS TO EAT ME!"
(This boss often eats Timpani and uses her as a means of attack. When at 25% health remaining he eats Timpani and swallows, preventing her from being used for the rest of the battle.)

After the battle, Leechtail disintagrates, leaving behind the Master Gem and a dragon slobber-covered Timpani.
Timpani: Ugh.........I think I can't move.....
Suddenly the Master Gem you already have glows, and turns Timpani into her human form.
Timpani: I am.....human again?
Mario nods his head, and then picks up the purple Master Gem.
