The sun was setting over Port Jackson, casting a golden glow on the Sydney Harbor Bridge and the world-famous Sydney Opera House. Seagulls screeched as they swung low over the harbor, and ship bells rang out across the waves.
The opera house itself, however, was dark and silent.
Spotlights lanced across from the shore, lighting up the concrete shells that made up the vast structure. Blue and red emergency lights reflected off the building and the entrance leading up to it. Overhead, police helicopters thrummed in the sky, keeping their distance.
A line of police ringed the shore, manning a concrete barricade that covered the entrance to the Opera House. Squad cars were intermingled with SRG vehicles. Local news vans were set even further back. The glare of news cameras and chatter of reporters was intermingled with the dull roar of the curious onlookers who were being held back by a police cordon a couple blocks from the Opera House itself.
