Description Dedicated to Trent Reznor, Metallica and all those that follow in their safe sanctimonious rehabilitated footsteps. You are now about as dangerous as a plastic safety razor locked in a vault and handled with kid gloves.

Bill Hicks Once Said:
"Cause you know, if you play New Kids on the Block albums backwards, they sound better. "Oh come on, Bill, they're the New Kids, don't pick on them, they're so good and they're so clean cut and they're such a good image for the children." Fuck that. When did mediocrity and banality become a good image for your children? I want my children to listen to people who fucking rocked. I don't care if they died in puddles of their own vomit. I want someone who plays from his fucking heart. "Mommy, mommy, the man that Bill told me to listen to has a blood bubble on his nose!" Shut up and listen to him play! The New Kids! "Hi we're the New Kids and we're so good and clean-cut..." (cocksucking noises) "We're so clean cut!" Seig Heil! Heil! Heil! A good clean country... Heil! Heil! Heil! (more cocksucking noises) Fuck that! I want my rock stars dead! I want them to fucking play with one hand and put a gun in their other fucking hand and go "I hope you enjoy the show!" (gun-fire noise) Yes! Yes! Play from your fucking heart!"

Some of it definitely does, although if we get rid of ALL rap then we also lose bands like RATM (rage against the machine), KORN, The MOLOTOV, etc

Yep, once we take back the original spirit of punk and every other street culture and bring it back to the point of DIY (Do It Yourself Or Don't Do It At All) then they'll be irrelevant.

You can’t necessarily expect all bands to make music for music. You have to just take music for music.
MCR, corporate tool? Possibly. Real punk? No. but then again they don’t pretend to be. They aren’t punk, they don’t say they are, they say they were influenced by it. so why are you all so intimidated and panicked by them?

In the end who the fuck cares, if it sounds good then just go with it even if it’s a giant ad.
A lot of these people saying all this β€œblah blah blah punk is dead blah blah blah but I’m still hard core.” And all that. It just seems strange to me, people who yell for change and revolution desperately grasping for that past. But regardless, Punk hasn’t died. It can’t die. Its name has been stolen. Most of those who call themselves punk nowadays are not β€˜punk’ but they now own that label. All the kids out there think they listen to punk but they aren’t listening to punk. That doesn’t mean punk doesn’t exist. There are still old school punk bans out there, there are still those who believe in true punk ideals. Evidently punk is not dead. Its nothing compared to its old glory. But that doesn’t mean its dead. Its name has just been stolen. True punk just inst as close to mainstream as it was, isn’t as easy to find. But is this such a bad thing?

But I do agree that the popularized styles can be aggravating. Seeing all the rocker clothing, all the hair dye and that everywhere. So common. Nothing special anymore.
Then again a lot of people probably see me as one of these fakes. And who knows, maybe I am. Perhaps tho, we should all stop caring about peoples perception of our subcultures.

Its impossible to be an individual these days, everything has been mainstreamed. Trying to be different is now a form of conforming.

Please try to reframe from noticing my contradicting my self.

Punk is not compleately dead. It's just hard to find these days. But I assure you that we'll be keeping it alive in small squatted venues across the globe rocking the system with anarcho-punk-hc-grind-crust-noise-shit (fuck these labels) and everyday more and more people join us. And I'm not talking about those 'fashionpunks' that you guys been talking here earlier, but the proper stuff. Then again I'm not a psychic so I really couldn't know, but it is still one motivation to me to do what I do that it could make an impact on that kinda level too. But saying this it's important to say that this is only one way to be involved and by no means the only, still we need more people attending us in the barricades taunting the police and what they are there to protect and so on, but one thing follows the other. I agree what you've said in this piece about the complete commersalation of the scene, but it got corrupted the day it was born and that is why it is still with us, out of breath but vigorous because it has been corrupted so many times. Oh well enough ranting for now I'll just piss off.

Shit man, I hear ya. In the mainstream world's eyes, real punk is dead and buried. But in the underground(where it belongs) people like us are keeping alive the spirits of the Sex Pistols, Social D, Black Flag, Minor Threat, Dead Kennedys, etc. Hell, even some of the true shit is getting whored out today. Look at Social D. They were gone even before Dennis passed(RIP). Bring back the mid-80's when Mike lost a chunk of his ear in a fight, spent time in rehab for heroin, comstant line-up changes, etc. My friends and I are working on some shit right now. No name, who needs one, a couple of anarchists, a socialist, all dedicated to real punk. None of that pre-packaged image shit. Full chords? who needs 'em, fifth's all the way. I'd put more but I'm so shitfaced right now.

As the home-made patch on my mate Tommunist's bag says, "Make punk a threat again".

Then he was arrested on trumped-up charges last Friday after giving the finger and yelling "Up yours!" at that whiney little so-called-"punk" kid when Australian Idol made an appearance in Brisbane. (Well he may have been a tad drunk at the time)

yeah, dude, yeah. And it's not just punk or just music. For some people it's like.. their whole essence and being.

People can't even imagine what it's like to simply be themselves anymore - they find some stereotypical image produced by an insensitive and money hungry media and cling to it desperately, trying to fit themselves into a niche that isn't there own in an attempt to be accepted by everyone else that's doing the same goddamn thing.

And in the end, it's people that don't do it that anyone has any real respect for.

Anyway, you speak the truth.

All the music today is just a fucking clone on what sells. It's pathetic. All the big time bands just have become a copy of what was the real good stuff. And people emulate their favorite bands they become rebels, punks, goths, and they all try to fit under a category. It's sad that the message in music is gone.

But you do get some some good songs, but in the end I find I like music based on they way it sounds, feels, and the way it effects me.

The Media has destroyed the good music... I mean we used to have great music and real bands.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

scart In reply to minuwolf [2005-08-04 23:29:33 +0000 UTC]

What it means for me is that, where you used to be able to know from the first couple of chords if a song was good or not, now you have to wait and see if it's an ad for nike shoes or mcdonalds or just a bunch of little quasi-rebels complaining cause their girlfriend won't blow em or pretending no-one understands them cause they're so radical while they make the same old conservative choices.

The range has widened and it means you have to sift through a lot more excrement to find the good stuff but thankfully there's still some out there.

This comes as an internal confusion to me.

On the one hand, I hate the new manufactured shit that is the music industry these days. It's started a whole whiney emo "everybody hates me " trend and fake rebellions along with "dood I'm yu-neeke". Suddenly, everyone's a rebel or everyone wears black or dyes their hair etc. All because their favorite bands did it. People listen to the stuff just to make themselves feel cool/rebellious/hardcore. There's a whole clothing style that goes along with each genre of music. Looking at a person's clothing and hair and makeup, you can tell what sort of music they listen to. I do it all the time when I'm walking down the street.

"My Chemical Romance... Usher... 50 Cent... Green Day..."

Music is a Trend now. It's another way to sell shoes/hats (g-unit) and clothing brands (various punk clothing). People don't make music for music anymore.

On the other hand, I like Trent Reznor... I guess I choose my music on what I like, not what I want to be. I like Nine Inch Nails. I like Marilyn Manson. I like shit like that. I like the sound, I like the feel, and I like how it relaxes me or hypes me up when I need it. I just hate what the media does with it all.

Music = Advertisement ... And that sucks

Good work.

Punk is in fact dead I'm afraid. Such a pity too, since the people that I am ashamed to call my generation keep trying to bring it back and all they get is a frankenstein-esque monster. It's been so mutilated that all we get are these emo-freaks and bubblegum rock. It's gotten so bad that I find myself straining to tell a difference between any of these bands like Sugarcult, Yellowcard, My Chemical Romance, or Fallout Boy. I see people who look punk. Their idols are pathetic, they stand for nothing, their 'punk' lyrics are devoid of all humor or purpose. They all buy it because of some teenage rebellous phase and you can see that that was the whole point when you try to cross-examine the lyrics and relieze that you don't have to look so hard. Since I was born in the late eighties, I lament that I'll never know what real punk was like as I stare at this monster and try to find out what it used to be before people took it for its shiny package and discarded what was inside.

Corperations didn't do it. People did it.

What can I say?
As a 40 year old Punk I can safely that the popular face of punk is indeed dead (save John Lydon, (Bless his cotton socks)).
But the next time you need a bank loan, or someone in authority has to decide your future for you, consider what might be going on in the head that decides.
We run this planet now and other people have forgotten the mindset.
To those people I say "Up bondage UP YOURS!"

Great piece!

Yes that's right, punk is dead,
It's just another cheap product for the consumers head.
Bubblegum rock on plastic transistors,
Schoolboy sedition backed by big time promoters.
CBS promote the Clash,
But it ain't for revolution, it's just for cash.
Punk became a fashion just like hippy used to be
And it ain't got a thing to do with you or me.

Movements are systems and systems kill.
Movements are expressions of the public will.
Punk became a movement cos we all felt lost,
But the leaders sold out and now we all pay the cost.
Punk narcissism was social napalm,
Steve Jones started doing real harm.
Preaching revolution, anarchy and change
As he sucked from the system that had given him his name.

Well I'm tired of staring through shit stained glass,
Tired of staring up a superstars arse,
I've got an arse and crap and a name,
I'm just waiting for my fifteen minutes fame.
Steve Jones you're napalm,
If you're so pretty (vacant) why do you swarm?
Patti Smith you're napalm,
You write with your hand but it's Rimbaud's arm.

And me, yes I, do I want to burn?
Is there something I can learn?
Do I need a business man to promote my angle?
Can I resist the carrots that fame and fortune dangle?
I see the velvet zippies in their bondage gear,
The social elite with safety-pins in their ear,
I watch and understand that it don't mean a thing,
The scorpions might attack, but the systems stole the sting.

PUNK IS DEAD.
