Description Ikatere is a ooak (one of a kind) handmade water demon sculpture. He is made from polymer clay over a wire and foil armature, with no moulding or casting of any kind involved. He is about 4 inches long from chest to bum, 8.5 inches long from tail to nose, and about 7 inches tall from feet to horn tips. He's got inset resin eyes that are a greenish yellow.

I started Ikatere about a year ago, but he kept getting pushed aside for other things. I finally finished sculpting him 4-5 months ago and he sat unpainted on my desk until now! I'm glad I waited until inspiration hit to paint him, because I really like how he turned out. He is very iridescent, painted in several interference colours and pearlescent powders. His body is teal/ turquoise in the middle and fades out to pearl white at the legs and to a deep royal blue at the horns and tail. These photos are actually quite accurate to what his colours look like in person, though he does shimmer different colours in different light.

I've taken to just calling him a water demon because I'm not really sure what he is. Someone said lizard wolf, someone else said kirin, so I don't even know. He's got fur, some feathers on his chest, scales, paws in front and claws behind, furry ears and tail, and horns. I was just making it up as I went along with the sculpting, trying to do something different (so it's sort of ironic someone said he looks like a kirin, teach me to try something different!)

Ikatere is for sale on etsy! [link]

I love the transition of colors! It gives the piece a sense of realism, which can't be achieved easily when using polymer clay. Fantastic job!

At first glance, I thought kirin too, though, now that I think about it...kirin don't have paws. XD Ah well, what ever he is he is absolutely beautiful.

Insert mindless gushing comment here.

No, really. The only thing I could possibly say is how much I love this. The color scheme is my all time fave, green-blue iridescence, and he's so freaking unique. I can so see him sitting in the cool shade of a forest pond - I wonder if he'd be more like a kelpie or if he'd be one of those that help wayward travelers. He looks rather friendly to me, but that's just me. xD

Thanks so much If I had painted him 6 months ago he would have been brown and red, so I'm glad I waited until proper inspiration hit. He does seem more on the kinder side!

Gosh I wish I could get a commission, but I'm not positive I can order anything eles this month. How much do your customs cost?

scenceable In reply to Shadie-Nordanners [2013-05-04 00:10:04 +0000 UTC]

My sculpture commissions all start at $200. Those kirins foals and Ikatere here are priced lower than my usual stuff. My commissions are usually on payment though, I do 50% deposit and 50%+ shipping on completion, which makes it a bit easier on the wallet
