Description Columbus Day became a federal holiday in 1934 under political pressure from a Catholic group called the Knights of Columbus. But apparently no one ran a background check on the guy, because far from being a national hero, Columbus was a gold-hungry, bloodthirsty, genocidal slave trader who should better be remembered for initiating centuries of oppression than a three-day weekend.

Dora the Explorer would make a better historical holiday candidate than Christopher Columbus.

That's not true. You shouldn't believe everything the media throws at you. Mr. Columbus indeed was poor. He asked every kingdom for money. Spain was the only one who agreed to help. The queen sold her jewel to pay for his trip to Indiato bring back riches. He however ended up in the new world. Yes, there was killing and slavery. No, this wasn't his work, but the work of his back-stabbing men. Being the responsible captain, he took the responsibility and was then killed. His intentions were to spread the faith only. His men would never listen to him. I don't care what charade anyone else will make up. I know the truth and those who wish to listen will know truth.

From my understanding, Columbus went looking for gold at least as much as God. He recruited his backstabbing men with child sex slaves, so their ensuing actions were indeed his responsibility.

If you really want to blame someone, blame Spain's queen. She gave him everything. Try saying no to her royal majesty, and your head came off. As I stated, everything you were told may have happened, but it certainly wasn't by him and he couldn't stop it, even if he was captain.

But it's still his responsibility as a human being to stand up against those kinds of atrocities, like the priest Bartolomé de las Casas did, accompanying Columbus. That's the kind of progress that really matters in History.

Unfortunately, he did. Thats why he was killed and is seen by many, including yourself, as a murder. I said what was needed to be said. Just try and imagine yourself in his situation.

I have to see that episode: "Dora pillages an entire ancient Mesoamerican civilization while learning what direction West is."

Can't the same be said for Amerigo Vespucci, or Magellan, or even Leif Ericson?

Just about all historical figures (and humans) have dark sides, but pimping tweens and feeding people alive to your attack dogs is where I draw the line at acceptable unacceptableness for my holiday heroes.

That's a fair cop. I have similar concerns about Halloween.
