Description
This is a commissioned painting of the cigar shop owned by Charles Menches between 1889 and 1892. According to many sources, the Menches brothers are credited with inventing the ice cream cone and the hamburger. I learned a lot of history in the process, but what a difficult piece this was! All I had to work from was a faded black and white photograph of the shop with a tiny Charles standing out front; it was my job to paint it large and in color. A lot of the surroundings were cropped out so I gave those more of a watercolor treatment here, vignetting the focal point more spectacularly.Acrylic on canvas, 24" x 24".

Very beautiful! One of my co-workers is actually part of the Menches family and they run Menches Brothers in downtown Akron next to the ball field. I'll have to show this to her, I'm sure she'll love it!

Hehe it's not for sale; it was commissioned and is already in the home of another branch of the Menches family. If she wants her own painting she can certainly commission a different one from me!
