I am not qualified to give critiques on the work of others.  But I will say this: Wonderful work Beth, for you to have done all of this with only a palette knife!  You are braver than I.  Only once do I recall using a palette knife in a painting, and that was by no means in the whole painting.  It was a scene of a large ocean wave cresting.   Our Carolyn (youngest daughter) has that painting.

Wow, thanks so much Joyce! I have found that I can use a palette knife as if I were icing a cake. I use a small one which makes things so much easier. One thing I do before I start though is to freehand draw the outline in pencil so that I have a guide before I start applying oil paint to a canvas. You should try it sometime!

I have several different pallet knive.  I have used them to scrape paint off a hard surfaced palette that came with my wooden paint box/easel, or to mix (blend) colors.  Now I have some disposable palette sheets, so I don't have to use the palette that came with my paint box.  I also have a wet palette with a cover, so I can keep paint from drying out for several days, and I have some special disposable sheets for it.   I may have a go at "painting" with the palette knives sometime. My problem is, I can't seem to break away from my graphite and colored pencils long enough to create art with any of the other materials I have.  I haven't looked recently, but I fear my oil paints may have all dried up. That happened once, and I had to replace many colors.  My acrylics will be in that state soon also, if I don't do something with them.  I have some tube watercolors, but forget about them!  Costly little buggers!  I should never have bought them.  I can't get motivated to use them at all.  I don't feel like wetting and stretching the paper (a necessary step to prevent it from buckling later) before securing it to a sturdy backboard, so I can begin painting on it.  The irony is, it has never bothered me to lay down a background color on canvas, before sketching and painting upon it.  Strange, don't you think?  I guess it all boils down to where one's comfort zone is.  I was comfortable with oil paints, until I took up graphite portrait drawing, and later began working with colored pencils.  I have neglected the rest of my art materials.

Joyce, I totally understand your predicament! I also love sketching and sometimes I am slow to want to start my oil paints because I cant seem to be motivated. I definitely want to start again soon so that I can teach this fall. If I get too 'rusty' it will be noticeable when I start at it again!
Have you tried watercolour block yet? That is one way to do watercolour that saves stretching the paper. I just tried it last fall and love it!
Hope you will try your hand at palette knife, it is worth the time and goes very quickly!
Great chatting with you my friend!

Wow, this is really detailed for a knife-only painting! This makes me want to get my knives out and make something.

Thanks...I had alot of fun attempting it. One of the main things that really work in this medium and with a palette knife is direction, but the knife has to be small enough to make detail. You should go for it!

Thank you so much. Ive been doing an African theme on and off and this is an attempt with a palette knife. I am happy with the results although it was tedious!
