Having grown up with pokémon, and recieving Sapphire as my first ever pokémon game, I can say that I really love this design and it's really an improvement to Mightyena. That's just my opinion though, not speaking for every pokémon fan.

I appreciate this. I've been hard pushed to find any hyena-like fanart. Most people interpret them as wolves, which is fine, but "yena" aside, their game descriptions are all hyena based behaviour and their pelt is thick on top and sparse underneath, also a hyena thing. You've done a lovely job of capturing all that! I love the pot belly too - hyenas aren't the most graceful looking!

My problem is that yeah the yena part makes sense and all like the bite and such etc BUT there is poochy in the the first evolution and that refers to dogs/canines plus they look more wolf like in the official Pokemon art TBH, when I was little I didn't give any second thought to it, it looked like a wolf based Pokemon and I like Canines so I always saw it that way, and I do like hyenas and I know their not cnianes but there no doubt that they do have canine like features, since I especially like canines I can't help but see that so it appeals to me, I can tell the difference but still...
Why bother including poochy at all if no intended dog like relations, plus pretty sure the Japanese has like Pochi in it which is basically the same in the sense that it refers to a dog
that's my Conflict

I honestly don't know why you're writing me all this. You're welcome to dislike my interpretation and draw your own. There is no one correct way to make a Pokémon realistic and I'm certainly not here to please everyone.

Sorry, I didn't mean to offend you I was not implying your interpretation was bad, it's just the controversy between hyena based vs wolf. I do agree the hyena makes sense if you look at the actual details but there's other things that lead people astray like the poochy part.
I still think your interpretation is awesome and I also like many of your other realistic Pokemon pieces, it's cool to see a realistic version instead of the usual cartoon/anime art of them, again I'm sorry I won't say things like that again

Bit to fat for a hyena, or a wolf for that matter.

Mightyena is not a wolf. The Mightyena in this art is spot on to what it truly is, a brown hyena. NOT a wolf.

Amazing work! It always bothered me that they looked so much like wolves yet were apparently supposed to be hyenas. Yours look great!

That’s not the reason. The reason Mightyena is “fat” is because it is keeping to realistic look of a hyena.

In my opinion, hyenas are way better than wolves. There are waaay to many wolf-based Poochyenas and Mightyenas.
alsO HOW THE FUCK DOES ONE NOT NOTICE THAT THOSE TWO ARE OBVIOUSLY HYENAS I MEAN WOW

I think it's because when most people hear the word "hyena" they only think of spotted hyenas like the ones from the Lion King. Almost nobody knows about the brown or striped hyenas (the later being primary inspiration for Mightyena). There's also the fact that so few people know how truly complex and sophisticated hyena society is, with the majority of people just imagining them as roving bands of scavengers rather than the matriarchal hunting packs that they truly are.
Also, the "pooch" in "Poochyena" probably throws most people off.
